STAGE TUBE: What if WICKED Was an Animated Disney Film?

Posted: 2/8/11 at 1:01amI absolutely loved this! I think an animated Wicked could be pretty amazing. Idina Menzel half-jokingly mentioned in an interview that her newest idea is to do it Avatar-style so she could still play Elphaba. But I seriously think that would be perfect. (but God, I wish when they turn this into a film, they'd fix that damn ending!)

And just really friggin' kill her, right? Because that's how I feel. I find the show to be messy and pandering, but I can't keep myself from enjoying it every time I see it, and while I'm not a fan of a lot of the changes from the book to the musical, the only one I find truly unforgivable is that goddamn ending!
I mean, if they could kill Jimmy Early...

Posted: 2/8/11 at 8:25amI loved it, it is just how I would imagine the scene would be done on film and there is no reason at all it can't be done exactly like that in a live action movie.

I'm not even a WICKED fan, but I even got choked up by that clip. I can't imagine it as anything but an animated film now - but it HAS to be classic, PINOCCHIO-quality animation. I'd want the film to me darker and more frightening (like PINOCCHIO is dark) than the stage musical.

Animated movies usually clock in at around 90 minutes, so if you want a truncated plot (from the already truncated plot) and about six songs from the stage musical, then this is the way to go.
I thought everybody hated it when Dreamgirls and Nine lost over half their scores. If it's to fit into a typical animated feature format, you'll get a lot of adorable hijinks with Elphaba and Chistery, the baby Cowardly Lion, and other (ready for plush-toy) critters, and you'll hear her sing about three times at most.
My guess:
A severely edited opening (No One Mourns the Wicked)
The Wizard and I
Dancing Through Life (edited way down to just Fiyero's part)
Popular
One Short Day (edited way down)
Defying Gravity
No Good Deed (edited way down)
March of the Witch Hunters
For Good
That would be all they'd have time for unless it was a 2 1/2 hour animated feature with everything people would want, which would cost the studio almost twice as much to produce as a 90 minute film. I don't think Disney or Universal or anybody else would approve a $250 million budget to do that.
