I was in a production of this in middle school. It might just be one of the tackiest shows I've ever seen.
No doubt.
But it gave a local SF performer, Sharon McNight, a Tony nomination to add to her credits of cabaret singer, first-ever female porn director (for the Mitchell brothers in the 70s) and AIDS activist. The mention of the double credits of Tony and porn always gets a reaction in her shows.

This is one of the shows that Encores should be producing if they stuck with their original mission.
Wow Gabriel Barre has quite the flops list on his resume... Rags, Starmites, Anna Karenina the Musical....
Gothampc, I'll remind you of this post in 10-15 years when it's petitioned to revive DRACULA, Bonnie & Clyde, Wonderland, etc!
I saw it on Broadway and it was awful. Gabrielle Barre played some type of lizard. My friend and i still joke to this day about the "Lizard from Starmites that got a Tony Nomination. Sharon Mc Night was a force but the show was just a hot mess. It must have been an awful year for musicals. I remember the roof was leaking and there was plastic over part of the orchestra pit... It was just awful.
WHY!?
It's a god awful mess of a show but Sharon McKnight's "Diva" performance was the only highlight and worthwhile moment!
The only other two--TWO!--nominees for Best Musical that year were BLACK AND BLUE and JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY. I believe it was the infamous CARRIE/LEGS DIAMOND season so, yeah, it was pretty bad.
Liz Larsen was also very good.
But it was baaaaaaaaaad.
I know I'm nuts, but I absolutely adore this show!!! The music is fun and the story has a lot of heart. With the right director I really think this could be a great show.
I can't even express how angry I am that I'll be away when it's at 54 Below.
