STATE FAIR

Which movie do you prefer--the 1945 version or the 1962 version?

My choice would def. be the 1945 version with Dick Haymes, Vivian Blake, and Dana Andrews. To me, that movie is magical even though it is not even close to being R&H's best. The 1962 version, while still good, tried to update things and some worked while majority of it didn't. Ann Margaret was more energetic than Vivian Blake, but Vivian had the voice.

So, which do you like better?

Same as you. But I just don't like either very much.

Didn't they watch it in an episode of M*A*S*H? Other than that I know nothing about it...

The 1962 version is the one I saw, when it was in theaters, and I loved it. Today, I see it's limitations, but it's still the one I prefer. I like them both, well enough, though.

The 1962 version with Ann-Margret is one of the worst films I have ever seen.

Vivian Blake? You must be a real theatre fan if you don't know who played Emily in the BEST film version of STATE FAIR re: STATE FAIR

CRAP! I meant, Vivian Blaine. Where did Blake come from? Sorry, I had a severe brain fart when I wrote that last night.

Definitely the 1945 - if only for the presence of Charles Winnegger - the original Cap'n Andy in SHOWBOAT - as the dad.

I like the score a lot. And Vivian Blaine did no wrong, at least for posterity.

I had only seen the 1945 version, and bought the new DVD that also includes the 1962 version. I put on the '62, and had to shut it off (well, after zipping through to watch the Ann- Margret numbers). It's pretty deadly - except maybe for Alice Faye, who at least has a few zingers that she lands well.

I liked Pat Boone's shower scene.
