Posted: 4/5/05 at 1:05amthat's a perfectly fine opinion munk, and i respect it. but i will tell you as someone who has seen the jej version when it was in dc. it is worth seeing. linda powell and jej are both very amazing. i saw leslie's understudy and think leslie must be much much stronger. but the cast is very strong and the production is very nice. it's not great, but it is a good play, and a very enjoyable evening. especially seeing jej making that connection with little billy (played by the kid who was in a raisin in the sun last year).

Posted: 4/5/05 at 1:09amNo, I think your opinion on On Golden Pond is quite likely to be accurate. I would put it a couple of notches above Steel Magnolias in the hype department, but perhaps a notch below Julius Caesar, which didn't get a ton of chatter itself. I don't really feel safe in predicting how it'll do in the box office, though.

Posted: 4/5/05 at 1:43amafter re-reading brantley's it is beyond clear that he doesn't like the material. he doesn't give much too the production nor the performances. each lady gets a non-descript sentence (excepting lily rabe). but overall he's just critiquing the work itself, not the production. interesting.

Posted: 4/5/05 at 1:50ami know. but i don't really respect it because it doesn't back up why we should dismiss this production. it just dismisses the source material, which, despite what brantley says, has already become successful over his head, and i don't think his opinion will change that. i wish he would have written a different review about the actual production. because i don't respect what he wrote.

Another Negative Review From Clive Barnes...

I agreed with Brantleys points a bit more than Clive's...but 2 major papers giving it slaps on the wrists isn't pretty.

Posted: 4/5/05 at 12:48pmCan someone answer a burning question: why did this play need to be revived? It's pretty flimsy, soggy material to start with. I found the film version unwatchable and can see no valid reason for this to be on Broadway.

I was listening to Joan Hamburg's show today and she saw Steel Magnolias last night. After the curtain, the writer addressed the audience and shared that everything in the show was a true story about his sister (Shelby). The little boy she gave birth to and who everyone was so worried about is now 22 years old. He was in the audience and came onstage to introduce himself. Joan said the whole audience was crying.

i saw the writer & his nephew on the Today show yesterday -- intercut with clips of the current B'way production (p.s. Delta Burke was still talkin' out the side of her mouth -- are we sure she hasn't had botched botox or something???!) -- and wouldn't ya know it... the little nephew who's now in his 20's turned out totally gay.
it's such a shame this production stinks.

Shirley I did feel that Delta Burke was awful. I confess to loving the movie and Dolly Parton's Truvy was so much better.
I did like the rest of the cast.
