I knew that Streep wanted to do EVITA and if I were ALW, I'd have given her that movie role if and only if she'd do the stage version of Sunset for at least 6 months.

That obviously didn't happen, and instead we got Madonna almost signing the role of EVITA in the movie (which flopped) and no replacement for Close who could sustain the required ticket sales.

Believe it or not, I actually think Carol Burnett could have done the role. She can do dramatic and I am surprised no one thought of her.

Well Carol Burnett is on that list of people invited to audition, so I'm sure she was considered. She also made a public bid for the role on the Tony Awards when she basically said how much she wanted to walk down that SUNSET staircase!

Speaking of Carol Burnett, has anyone seen her spoof of Sunset Boulevard (the movie)? I haven't, sadly.

'Evita' is one of his best; a big part of that has to be attributed to the lyrics of Tim Rice (the last show they worked on 'officially' together). Lloyd Webber has never had a lyricist as good as Rice...look at 'Evita' against 'Starlight Express'

When you say Evita, the movie, was a flop, do you mean financially? Didn't it win the Golden Globe and get a Best picture Oscar nom?

Anyway, as much as I've enjoyed reading this thread, I'm not gonna read the whole thing to find out if this is discussed...

Can anyone describe to me the scenic design of Sunset? I really know very little about the show, but love the movie...and with the talk of the new movie I've become really curious about the stage production....is it as much of a spectical as ALW others?

Sunset Boulevard was my favorite ALW show until I saw Evita staged, then Evita took the lead by a nose. re: SUNSET BLVD. [?] I dunno, I just love the politics within Evita... Latin American politics really interest me. Though it bothers me how Che is Che Guevara... but that's another rant for another time.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

The problem with Evita on stage is that it's very episodic. I don't think all the musical's numbers (which are great by the way) are that well tied together, making it a little difficult to follow.

I have seen Patti, Betty, Elaine and Petula. And I'm sorry I never got to see Glenn. I hete the Broadway recording, but you guys meke me SOOOO curious. The fun thing about Sunset was that the show changed completely with each new actress. I must admit that I never play that score "for fun", but there is no denying the theatrical magic that was created on stage. My favourite performance was Betty buckley and John Barrowmore. I have never been so impressed by a Broadway singer and doubt that will ever happen again. So much power and so scary. Have watched her finale 3 times from the front row in london and once from the very last row in New York (student rush........oh I miss that these days....) and Miss Buckley blew me away every single time. Miss Lupone was a different matter. I'm a great fan of het word, but this was strange. At the time I saw her only the Streisand versions of With one look and As if.... had been released and I ended up thinking "what is all the fuss about"? I never got involved in the story, and why was she behaving the way she did. Elaine Paige had a tough act to follow for me (Betty....), but she was surprisingly good. Her version of As If.... is the best ever in my opinion. And indeed: she was very funny, that petite woman in those ludicrous clothes! Petula Clark hounds me in my nightmares: just awful.
