I suggest you get familiar with the show because it's largely sung through and the story is complex.
Better yet, get the DVD with Lansbury and Hearn. That's all the prep you'll need.

Definitely get familiar with it via the DVD or CD (I suggest the DVD, though). But don't expect to see what you're watching on the DVD... this production is MUCH different.
I would stay away from the DVD if I were you. As other people have said, this show is very very different from the original production and it migth give you false impressions of the show...especially since you are new to the material.
I would thought, listen to the cast recording before seeing the show.
i also say get the dvd
i disagree with all of the other people. The story isn't as complex as they make it out to be. Go see the show and listen to the lyrics. I saw it without knowing the entire story and I knew exactly what was going on. Its very cryptic and suspenseful, and its awesome!

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE SCORE BEFORE YOU SEE THIS SHOW!! The best part of this show is the lyrics are crystal clear!! You also donb't want to fall completely in love with Lansbury!! Listen to it after you see this production.
I went with a friend last night who had never heard the score and she LOVED it!! Later on when I played her the OBC she only loved the show more.
and now my 2 cents:
Learn about it before you go. In whatever way you like. But you should know something. I would suggest watching the DVD. Especially if you can rent it or check it out of a library.
edit: it wont be at blockbuster, but may be at a local large library or music library at a school.
thanx y'all.
i believe i'll wait to hear it when i see the show.
I just saw it today and I have heard of Sweeney Todd and wasn't that familiar with the show...I knew the plot and a few songs, but that's about it.
It wasn't too difficult to understand, I got a little lost at a few parts in the beginning, but was able to catch up.
Hax and I are in the same boat and this thread just has me more and more torn.
I think I am going to watch the Lupone/Hearn concert DVD to familiarize myself with the music.
It seems to be the safest bet.
