Hey guys, since there are so many knowledgeable people on this board I figured I would ask here. My soon to be husband and I are going to San Francisco for our honeymoon and I would like to know what are some of the must check out regional theaters? We will be there September 1-6...we both love musicals. I think Something Rotten is playing while we are up there but we live in LA and have tickets for that here...thanks for your suggestions!:)

hi there
there is often not a lot playing as it is labor day weekend
a few things going on that week
Something rotten which is wonderful as you mentioned
Aint too proud temptations musical berkeley rep world premiere good buzz on this show, ill be going in the next few weeks to this show
the speakeasy by boxcar theatre in sf is interactive and very fun you dress in 20s outfits and go to a real speakeasy with actors and musicians interacting with youthis is a hot ticket and many friends have loved it-book in advance
sf playhouse will be running la cage au folles-they typically do wonderful productions with equity actors. Ill be going to this production
beach blanket babylon-long running musical review with great costumes often political themes always fun-i go every few years and bring friends-can also be a hot ticket on the weekend
beauty and the beast woodminster theatre outdoors in a redwood park in oakland hills stunning location and typically solid production with mix of equity and non equity players. bring a picnic dinner and wine. not at the level of sf playhouse or act but makes up for it with location and setting and fun factor
www.theatrebayarea.org is a good source for additional shows....
Another thumbs up for SF Playhouse (though not specifically about La Cage which I haven't seen), but I've seen 6 or 7 productions there in the past couple years and all were very well done. Intimate theater, and great location on Union Square with lots of dinner and cocktail options before and/or after the show.
Echo all that was previously mentioned. We caught La Cage last weekend. Excellent production up to SF Playhouse standards.

thanks broadwaysfguy! I booked Ain't too Proud at Berkeley Rep! So excited, love checking out a new theater. I hope it's fairly easy to get to from San Francisco!
Very easy! Take BART, our light rail system. It's what I use to go to Berkeley Rep. The theater is just steps from the Downtown Berkeley station.
