Sandy Duncan...

Posted: 5/13/04 at 12:16pmJust wanted to get the general opinion of Sandy Duncan onstage. Dont know much of her work, but I've seen clips of her as Roxie in Chicago, the awful film version of "Star Spangled Girl" (hated the film, but LOVED her) and old version of Pinoccio that she did, and am very much looking forward to seeing her in The King & I. Also, for those who saw it, how did her Peter Pan compare to Cathy Rigby's?

Infinatly superior to Rigby. Rigby is a good journyman actor (nothing wrong with that). Duncan has genuine "star quality" (something that is very rare nowadays). Have seen her in several roles and she always lights up the stage.
Just my opinion, I may be wrong.

I saw her Roxie. Winning, an older spin on the Renee characterization, i.e. aging bimbo suddenly in the midst of a world she didn't bargain for. I'm in the minority -- I like older Roxie's (after Gwen). Well sung, v. well danced.
Her Peter Pan production(s), though lavish, weren't as fresh or well directed as the Rigby's initial effort (which found more pizazz in Neverland sequences). But she was a formidable if "classic" Peter, more in the okay-I'm-really-a-woman-but-so-what Mary Martin tradition than Rigby's athletic androgynous approach.

Stefanie was the one and only - The GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E. The American version of Mrs. Peel. Do a Google.

Posted: 5/14/04 at 10:50amSandy Duncan, while having a wholesome good girl image, is actually quite earthy and fun. I remember when she was doing MY ONE AND ONLY in NY with Tune. There were plans to take the show to Japan, and a group of japanese investors came to the show one night. The stage manager went to Sandy's dressing room and said that they would like to meet her after the show. She said, completely deadpan, "Oh, sh*t -- does this mean I have to f**k 'em all?"

We went to see it a couple of times and she recieved standing ovations both times. If you get the chance to see her in the show then I strongly advise you to go - you'll have a fabulous time.
