I think that it works best in the original version (though the Sandy Duncan one is cool), because the original has the right idea: that Neverland is for the young. Whether they are the Lost Boys (children) or the Indians (teenagers). That's why the Pirates don't belong there, they are adults.
I LOVE the way the Indians in the Mary Martin version are wearing Keds sneakers. That is perfection.
When they try to "correct" it, the number gets thrown out of whack.
Like in the Sandy Duncan version, I'm thinking, when Tiger Lily does those high side, kicks that (from where Peter's standing) he can see all the way to Florida.
And in the Cathy Rigby version that I saw, all the other Indians looked like Indian Chiefs with full ceremonial headdresses and everything. It looked like the cast of "Dancing With Wolves" was crossing the stage.

Robbins original point (and I suppse JM Barrie's) was that these are Indians only in the sense of how British children of the time would play at them--nothing more or less. to try to make them authentic natives is beyond ridiculous
PalJoey--my god how old are you?! 60?!
Not quite. On the off chance that your question was NOT meant as some sort of insult, I will be 53 in 3 weeks.
If you had bothered to ever read some of my posts from the past few years, you would know that I am proud of each and every one of those years, which enabled me, among other things, to see the original Company, Follies and Night Music multiple times, work with some extraordinary people, live, laugh and love, and to put it Sondheimishly, "I got through all of last year and I'm here."
Now, what are you getting me for my birthday?

And, I might ask, what's wrong with being 60? I'm 61, thank you very much!
Nothing is wrong with being 60! Nothing at all. It's just that PalJoey comes off as someone who is between the ages of 11 and 14 in his posts, and it really turns me on. MEOW!
I love you too, Pussycat.
Is there any surviving footage of Christopher Hewitt or George Rose from that production. I've never found any.
I found one here!
