I saw it on Saturday night with Sasson Gabay — the spelling is Gabay, according to the Playbill, although I’ve seen it both ways — and I loved his performance. I have seen it with both Tony Shalhoub and Dariush Kashani, so I have a basis of comparison, and I found Mr. Gabay’s performance the most enjoyable. His Tewfiq seemed more accessible, if that makes sense, and less restrained than the other two, so I was able to follow the evolution of his character throughout the play more easily. Also, he is obviously charmed by Dina, and their interaction is a lot of fun. I wouldn’t say he seems attracted to her at all — that might very well be off-putting, given the obvious difference in their ages — but he seems to find her engaging in a way the other Tewfiqs did not, which livens up the “park” scene a lot.
Obviously others’ mileage may vary but that was my take.
