Saving Playbills

I plan on having them all eventually individually framed with the ticket stub underneath, but for now, since of what Dollypop mentioned, I keep them in plastic envelope type things that they sell for comic books.
Dolly: I have playbills back from the 40's, including Judy Garland at the Palace. They are all in great condition - a little yellowing, but not crumbling. Try keeping them in plastic...or frame them. I have so many originals to all the classics, so I'm going to get them in frames ASAP.

I went through and counted this summer and I have 459, not including duplicates... plus 74 since September. I should really take care of them like you guys are... Summer project...

I have about 400 & some signed
I kick myself that I did not get Peter Allen to sign Legs Diamond or Vincent Price to sign Darling Of The Day
I do have a signed Playbill from Home Sweet Homer signed by Yul Brynner

Posted: 2/28/05 at 6:27pmI save them too. I have them all in a steel safe. Sadly, I have too many to fit in the safe. I recently made collages out of the duplicates and now have 4 hanging on my wall. The ones that don't fit are stacked on top of the safe and dusted regularly. They are the only part of my room I make an effort to keep clean. Some people have children, some people (like thoseold cat ladies)have their animals. Me? I've got Playbills.

Posted: 2/28/05 at 6:28pmI used to not really care about them until I got a few of the really good Playbill binders for Christmas. I immediately went all around my house to find as many of my Playbills as I could. Now I'm obsessed with saving them in perfect condition and showing off all my autographed Playbills. I'm thinking about getting one of those special Playbill frames for my Broderick/Lane autographed Producers Playbill.

Thanks for the suggestion, Munk, but I have over 3.000 Playbills so framing them is out of the question.
I have an interesting story about collecting Playbills:
Years ago, I saw the musical REX and had Glenn Close, Penny Fuller and Ed Evank sign it. My friends and I went to a restaurant for dinner and I guess I had one too many dinks (the perils of alcohol!) and somehow I lost my Playbill. I went back to the theater to see if I could get another one (which I did) and Richard Rodgers was leaving the theater. Yup, I got him to autograph the Playbill!

Posted: 2/28/05 at 6:56pmI have all my playbills. I wish I was as organized as most of you, but mine are all just sitting in a drawer in my room. I plan to organize them into boxes someday (whenever I have a spare minute which seems to be NEVER!)

Posted: 2/28/05 at 7:08pmi have all my playbills in a plastic box that's getting a lil too small...
#33re: Saving Playbills
Posted: 2/28/05 at 7:09pmi always take 5 extra playbills when i go to the theater. the sixth is the one i autograph andn write the date on. i decorate the door to my room with the playbill covers of the 10 most recent broadway shows i have seen. i also have the 4 most recent playbill covers hanging up at my desk at work. whenever people come over and they see them, they ask if the shows were good and if i recommend them. the rest of the playbills are sitting on my shelf in a pile. i love collecting things!

Wow, I thought I was bad. I started collecting playbills...I think Aida and Flower Drum Song were the first about 3 years ago. Over the years my sister found two we saw before that buried in her closet, so now I'm just missing a Damn Yankees, B&TB, POTO, Sound of Music, King and I and two rents, but I'm sentimental, I only want ones from the exact show I saw, and I only have the need to keep one. Right now I have them all in a pile from oldest-Les Miz to most recent-Fiddler. Eventually I will get them on the wall somehow. I dunno, I never bother to write dates, and the only time I put the ticket in was at Idina's last performance. It's pretty funny though, when I decided to start collecting playbills, I was at my friend's house and her sister had about 10 hung on her door and I was in shock wondering if I could have that many...I now have over 30.

I never saw the point in saving them.
Oooh, I have to save them. It drives me crazy when I see a new show and think, "Hey, I've seen that person in something." I look at their bio and dig out my playbills to see if I've seen any of their shows. It comes in handy, especially when you discover new faces and realize you saw them 10 years ago in a musical. I recently came across one of my first broadway show playbills and noticed I just saw the lead guy in one of our touring musicals recently. Back then I didn't know who he was, so those things are kinda cool to discover.
I also enjoy going back and looking through old playbills - I can't imagine *not* keeping them.

I have the one from Wicked, which I saw 2 months ago. I've lost most of the others in moving/purging/spring cleaning over the years.
My dad recently found his Playbill of the OBC of Jesus Christ Superstar, which he saw when he was in still high school. My sister and I tried to convince him that he should sell it on Ebay or something, but he wanted to save it- but then lost it again a week later.

Posted: 3/1/05 at 10:02amI have kept all of my Playbills...all 5 of them. But thats good considering. I put my tickets for anything I do on my door. But whenever I see local theater things, I save the programs from those too, they're in a big gift bag in my room. I like to look at them, and read the bios. I like to see where actors went to college, or what type of experience they had, so I can learn from them. And I always read about who designed the costumes, since that is my career of choice at the moment.

I have way too many - covering years and years of theatre-going, along with some interesting ones I've picked up at flea markets, from friends, etc.
Every now an then I go through them and put a few on eBay - it helps finance continued playgoing.

Posted: 3/1/05 at 12:56pmI have a lot of playbills!! Some old but most of them are new. Whenever my parents see a show, I take their playbills because they don't want them. I'll also try to get a program from the shows that I like. I get all the old playbills from the B'Way flea market.

Posted: 3/1/05 at 2:17pmI tend to save them, but not really obsessively. I always take them home, and never knowingly throw them out, but I've lost a few along the way. I used to keep ticket stubs, but I've definitely loosened up on that over time. But yes, I do have most of my playbills, either in a pile by my desk (most recent) or in a box under my bed. What I HAVE started doing is keeping a document on my computer with each show I see, the date, where, and who was in the cast, just for easier reference!

I am the ultimate pack rat. I always grab extra playbills as I am leaving the theatre.
I am fortunate enough to know someone who is a carpenter. He was nice enough to make me frames for my playbills free of charge. They are gorgeous! I have most of the "special" ones in the frames and will be spending the next 4 months trying to decide where they should be hung on my walls.

Posted: 3/1/05 at 4:23pmWow, date writing and ticket taping sound like great ideas! I have Playbills from every show I've seen. Problem is, I usually keep more than one and they take up a lot of space. I've ebayed some of my duplicate Rent (original cast) and Les Miz (anniversary cover) playbills to help fund that nasty musical theater habit I've got. so they don't collect dust...they can collect money to see more shows!
