The dancing is real. The dance shoes have mics in them, but it's all real. I also had a backstage tour and saw them for myself.
I would agree with the "don't kick a dog while it's down" thing but I don't think Pirate Queen is a dog. I love the Pirate Queen and no matter what, I'm not ashamed of that. I didn't want to see it because of what the reviews said and frankly, I expected I'd have a good laugh at a really bad show but all problems aside, I thought it was very moving.
Broadway seems to be going into two directions at once: artsy, minimal intellectual one way and Disney/movie-based/fluff the other. Pirate Queen doesn't have a place on today's Broadway stage, sadly. But I think that if it does in fact have a North American and European tour, it will gain a following. It's a good show with a lot to offer.

Geez chill, I only said it to piss you off. It looked real when I saw it.
You never saw it, the only show you ever saw on Broadway was All Shook Up.
sad to say it but shows about the life and times of struggling women do not seem to thrill theatre fans.

Unfortunately, not for "serial."
I saw All Shook Up in previews.
At the end of May I saw, in this order from the Wednesday matinee to Friday evening, Curtains, Grey Gardens, The Pirate Queen, and Legally Blonde.
ETA: If you want to be really specific, Legally Blonde was on June 1st.

And your personal agenda to discredit me is amusing and cute and transparent.
I don't need to try and discredit you. You DISCREDIT YOURSELF on a daily basis just fine. Posting just to piss people off? The only thing transparent is your lack of maturity, and it's NOT cute, nor is it amusing.

I think it's more likely that we'll see a national tour of "Lestat" than Pirate Queen in the near future. I hope the European PQ tour happens, and I also hope this will be a chance to seriously re-work the book and score. It was very frustrating to read Riedel's recent column about how Boublil and Schonberg wouldn't allow Maltby to make major changes to the book between Chicago and NY.
Of course I don't know if Riedel's column is true, but while there were some big improvements to the lyrics and nice bits of historical context added there were no significant structural changes done after Chicago.

Actually, according to the documentary on PBS, lots of big changes were made between Chicago and New York. And according to the producers, negotiations are already underway for a North American tour.
ETA: And using Lestat to insult Pirate Queen is really desperate.

Well despite what you may believe, I really DON'T care that much.
If you really cared you'd send me more interesting PM's than "you're ugly". And then I might THINK about communicating back with you. I just really can't take you seriously enough to care. I'm sorry.
Sorry to threadjack. You all can continue discussing the matinee if you'd like.

It's okay to be ugly. Haven't you seen "The Woman in White?" Lead Female Role, ugly! (technically she is "Plain" in the musical, 'cause it would suck to be cast based on ugliness) Besides, anyone who takes the time to look at the "Fan Photos" section can see that you are adorable.
By the way I thought I wasn't worth responding to?

So do you think in Evita Che should just say "Once upon a time a young girl became the first lady" and then start at act 2?
Pirate Queen tells a story. sit there, shut up, and watch it. watch steph act her balls off and the at the end cry with her instead of thinking so hard about structure that you miss the point.
She loves her father, her boyfriend. she looses both. then is sent to jail... I mean this is just so heart wrenching i cannot see how someone could sit in the hilton and not be tickled... unless they lack just that. a heart.
And p.s. I LOVE LOVE LOVE wicked but Woman in White was not as exciting. there was no flying or monkeys or a dragon and thank you for proving my point.
I love Pirate Queen and because of this thread I am seeing the next matinee on Saturday.

Mics in the shoes?
If it's true, it's silly, because it's obvious only three or four of the ensemble is truly trained in this style of dance, and they couldn't be making the sound I heard, unless of course, they had mics in their shoes. how silly.
It's not discrediting anyone's dance prowess if they recorded the sound, I wouldn't be surprised if that whole sequence was pre-recorded anyway.
It's a dreadful show, and if someone thought that this was minimalist, they have no idea about minimalism at all. This was not minimalist, it was just dreadful. You want a GREAT minimalist theater piece, then listen to Philip Glass' La Belle et La Bete, what extraordinary music writing there.
I wanted to like this, especially after I knew what it was about, but it was badly written, all around.

Posted: 6/14/07 at 2:15amThere's no need to get personal with the PQ fans or anyone fighting over it. It's closing soon enough. Let's just let the performers and fan have their moments with their beloved show. I hated it but love how the fans are a little zealous about it.

I never said it was minimalist. I said Broadway shows are going in that direction. Pirate Queen didn't. Pirate Queen bothered to have sets and look good.
Fans of everything are zealous with everything. It's not just Pirate Queen. But I can see how a Pirate Queen fans can get a little overly passionate about the show closing. No one wants to see a show they love close.
ETA: Also, I think I remember hearing about how the stage in Riverdance was set up with mics to amplify the dancing and there were lots and lots of feet on that stage. So whether it's four dancers or a few dozen, sometimes they need mics. You wouldn't think it's silly for a singer to need a mic.

Posted: 6/14/07 at 2:48amYou're right, we are all passionate about the shows we love, and it sucks when shows close. I guess I respect all you PQ fans for your VERY PASSIONATE love for it. =)
#45re: Saw today's Matinee of The Pirate Queen
Posted: 6/14/07 at 3:35amPirate Queen fans are overly "passionate" because, as has been hypothesized, they feel like they personally know the people in the cast and crew and creatives thanks to "Castcom." Therefore, they are emotionally attached outside of a regular audience member, and cannot judge fairly, which is why they love it so much. Also which is why they take personal offense to criticism of the show and get so defensive. And they get so defensive when they hear this proposed theory. Denial much? :P

Exactly so. Pirate Queen fans are no more passionate about this show than, for example, the fans of Company, who have also been bemoaning it's imminent closure.

Posted: 6/14/07 at 6:41amI think the reason some people may have assumed that the taps were recorded in PQ is because the taps were recorded in both Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. I have been an irish dancer since I was 7 and am friends with 3 of the dancers in the cast of PQ (as well as many who were in Riverdance and Lord of the Dance). I never thought to ask them whether the taps in PQ were recorded or not because they sounded natural to me.

"ETA: And using Lestat to insult Pirate Queen is really desperate."
Why is that desperate? For that matter, why would anyone wanting to "insult" The Pirate Queen have to be desperate? The critics and marketplace have spoken, and unlike mine those opinions matter. I realize that there are people who honestly love this show, and my comments about the "artificial intimacy" of Castcom aren't meant to belittle those feelings. I think Castcom was an amazing success, and might be Pirate Queen's most significant contribution to Broadway.
Besides, my statement wasn't hyperbole, I honestly think that a national tour of Pirate Queen in its current form is less likely than a national tour of Lestat. Mounting a tour in North America is a huge risk, and it requires the subscription houses and presenters to also assume a great deal of risk. Who in their right mind is going to want to take a risk on a big expensive show that didn't get one single positive review or even one Tony nomination and couldn't get NY theatergoers to show up at $35 a seat? Do Doherty and McColgan really feel like sinking another 10 million or so into once again putting this material before American audiences and critics?
I think it's much more likely that a tour could be mounted in Europe, and I hope that happens, with lots of revisions. It took years to get Les Mis and Miss Saigon to work. Compared to those shows Pirate Queen has been rushed to Broadway, with disasterous results.
