Who exactly made this announcement at "Children and Art?" I don't see why a London Rodgers and Hammerstein revival would be announced at a NY Sondheim event, plus I've only read about this on message boards so far...
I thought that it was only rumored that Sound of Music was going to start soon... but there wasn't anything definite. But maybe there has been...
Dreamcatcher... RINGER right here! I am known around my school for being "obsessive" about things, and LOTR is one of them.

SCARLETT FOR SALLY BOWLES IN THE LONDON REVIVAL!!
no, not a piece of news, just a dream :)
She can act?
phhsss hahha...that'll be interesting...
I'm not a fan...even if she can sing i just don't like her...s that just me?
I hope she can sing, because she certainly will be unable to make maria a charming character at all. That girl cant deliver a joke or punchline to save her life. Anyone remember her presentation at the oscars for the last 2 years? Sad. In every movie she's in, i feel like she's carried by the other performances.
Kangaroo- WOOHOO! Another obsessive fan! :-P I have a few friends who are huge LotR nuts. I then got sucked into it and am now happily one of them.
As for the actual topic of this thread, I don't really know anything about Scarlet Johansson so I can't really say whether I'd think she'd do well in this role or not. I'll just have to wait and see.

That'll be one bodacious Maria. It'll give Kurt and Friedrich new reason to sing MY FAVORITE THINGS.
Jamie, love the profile pic. I saw that in AOL news and thought, they must by joking.
I like her a LOT as an actress. One of the best young stars out there. She was great in "Lost in Translation", "A Love Song for Bobby Long", and ESPECIALLY "Girl with a Pearl Earring".
I'm not sure how she would do with Maria, though...
is this by chance gonna be this time next year? i'll be in London for a semester Spring 06..soo...i'd have to see that
thanx theatreboy
no thanx to scarlet
snooze.
Just thought I would bump this now that it is being announced that ALW is officially pursuing her.
... ugh.
Not a fan. I suppose she CAN sing, though, if he wants her so badly.
Can she though? I haven't heard her. And her speaking voice is alarmingly deep for the role, I would say.
Her speaking voice isn't that deep. It's not like Kathleen Turner playing Maria....
Kathleen is about 30 years older than Scarlett though. I am sure when she's Kathleen's age, Scarlett will sound just like her.
I would pay one million dollars to see Kathleen Turner play Maria.
Princeton,
Can you just imagine Kathleen as Maria? I would be there with you, million dollars in hand, just to watch her scare the hell out of those damn kids!
There is no need for a revival of The Sound of Music? I can understand that for Broadway, but this is the West End. Was there a West End revival since the 1981 Petula Clark production? Tweny-five years seems like an ok length for a revival of such a universally loved show as this. I can't see Scarlett in this role, mainly because of her voice, which is rather low and husky. I have no idea what her stage presence is like, but on screen she plays everything very small with no hint of projection. If she does it, I hope she gets a good vocal coach. I loved her in Pearl Earring, but I can't imagine that she is the BEST choice for this role.
Though she's better than a lot of actresses her age, Scarlett is so boring and flat....I really enjoy a lot of the movies she's done, but because of other people in them.
I don't want to see a "sexpot soprano" -- and I'm coining that phrase.
But really, her speaking voice isn't right, and unless that raspiness disappears from her singing...

I read the autobiography of the real Maria-and she really was about 21 when she fled with the family to Austria. She was only a few years older than her oldest stepdaughter. She and the captain had like 9 more kids together. It's a great book. They actually just drove right out of the country.
