I keep hearing that Damn Yankees is Sean Hayes' New York stage debut but I swear I recall that several years ago he did something off-broadway...or a reading perhaps? anyone?
J52, Hayes just played Chuck Baxter in a workshop of PROMISES, PROMISES opposite Anne Hathaway and directed by Rob Ashford a couple months ago. He also starred in a reading of a new musical called NERDS (rumored to be Broadway-bound) out in LA last year.
Perhaps that is what you're thinking of?
If I remember correctly, he was slated to perform as The Cat in the Hat in "Seussical," but it closed before he took the stage in the role. I might have my actors mixed up though - I just remember a story previewing having (potentially) both Will & Grace guys starring on Bway. (Eric McCormack was Henry Hill in Music Man)
Not a bad picture.

I figured it out.
It was a workshop called Platonically Incorrect and it played two nights in June 2001 at the Westside Theatre.
That's what I was thinking of. Why wouldn't that be considered his New York stage debut?

I met Sean backstage at the MUSIC MAN when I was visiting with Eric. Sean denied any truth to the stories that he was going into SEUSSICAL. (That doesn't mean there wasn't s germ of truth to them, though!)
I finally saw DAMN YANKEES this past Saturday, and I have to disagree with the critics who gave not so glowing reviews of Sean Hayes's vocals. Maybe SH was still settling into the role when the critics came in, but SH is quite a fine singer and his THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLD DAYS was very good.
BTW, I did not realize just how much the 1994 "revival" was altered from the original. It was a little jarring actually to see how the show was originally written and meant to be performed.
I really liked the '94 revival. Maybe because I was only 15. But I thought Victor Garber was awesome and I loved Bebe Neuwirth. I understand why many people felt she was miscast but I enjoyed her performance nonetheless. When Charlotte D. took over I was less enthralled, particularly with her vocals even though her dancing was stellar (as always).
jsg -- I was there Saturday night too and would whole heartedly agree. I thought the production was delightful and he was TERRIFIC!!
Ftworthguy, glad you agree! I liked SH's take on Applegate, and that was some fine piano playing too last Saturday night.
J52, I was not crazy about Charlotte d'Amboise's vocals in the "revival" either, but hands down, the worst was Liz Larsen's "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo." Vicki Lewis's version, which can be seen somewhere in youtube for the 1994 Tonys, rocked. Larzen's was painful to listen to.
There were some great actors in that production -- Scott Wise and Gregory Jbara immediately come to mind. There were also some terrific Joe Hardys in that production as well. Jarrod Emick, of course, as well as Eric Kunze. Victor Garber was a fine Applegate as well. Jerry Lewis was... Jerry Lewis.

Whatever happened to Scott wise?
He looks good in that picture, but it seems like a lot o' makeup for a rehearsal...
(Maybe just Photoshopping though.)
