The Tony Awards NEVER pick up huge ratings
Good point. But look on the bright side. At least the Tonys aren't at the very bottom of the ratings barrel for major awards shows. That honor would go to the Daytime Emmys.
I will watch regardless of who hosts, as usual, but I don't believe that Sean Hayes is going to pull in viewers from middle America. I still think Jackie Hoffman and Nathan Lane would have been a great team-- I cannot get enough of Jackie's video blogs and she and Nathan seem to have a nice chemistry when he appears briefly in them with her. Sean Hayes just sounds kind of bland to me.

Yeah, but who the hell is Jackie Hoffman?
Jackie Hoffman is just a personal favorite of mine. I am aware of the fact that she would definitely not play in middle America either. It just seems to me that the network is taking advantage of the Newsweek controversy. I liked Sean on WILL AND GRACE; maybe a teaming of Sean and Megan (Karen of W&G) would be a good pairing.
If Jackie Hoffman ever achieved the level of fame to host the Tony Awards she wouldn't have any of her self-loathing schtick left.

"Sean Hayes was a VERY last-minute choice and, I would venture to guess, not the first choice. Wake up, you people in dreamland. The Tony Awards NEVER pick up huge ratings "
you think so? very last minute? sure, the Tony's don't prep like with hosts chosen for the Oscars in advance, but that last minute? and it being turned down to boot..hmmm. I think the presenters know well in advance of it being announced because they have to look somewhat prepared. award shows are not easy to pull together and you can't just throw a host in last minute. (ah...maybe you can, but i don't agree) as for ratings i think some years garnered more viewers than others and although it is NOT a huge ratings get for CBS, I don't think Hayes would hinder what they do get in any way. I also think he may bring some more viewers. He has a lot of fans.
I think Sean will be great! Who really gives a sh*t if middle America watches the show anyhow?

Given that he still has a following from a long-running television series, he's actually a very smart choice.
The ratings for the Tonys are always so abysmal that if he can bring in a certain percentage of Will and Grace fans, it could easily be their highest ratings in years.
And Promises may have gotten a beating by the critics, but many of the tourists at the recent performance I was at were there for Hayes.
Who cares what choice he was on their list? He's a good choice and may brighten up the show in a pretty boring season on Broadway.

Good point Mildred. I agree with you on this. I do have to say that the Tony's aren't going to pick up huge ratings due to the fact that most of America doesn't pack up and fly to NYC to see every show that opens on Broadway in a season. Heck even the very vast majority of "theater professionals" don't even check out many Broadway shows. That's just a fact. They don't "open" in 3,500 movie theaters across the country. At least Sean is a name that has been on national TV, so by the logic of that some will tune in just to see him host. I only live as far away as Philly and most professionals in the business here, when I ask them what they thought of a particular Broadway show, haven't even heard much about it or are too focused on "winning a Barrymore Award" that they don't even give NY Theater much of a second thought. That is unless they are road show producers interested in turning a profit.
