Glenn Close also hosted the night she won ... Two times!
Nathan Lane also hosted and won. Similarly, Matthew Broderick was the host and lost.
I don't think he will be upset if he loses. He is a professional and he understands that he is in the company of some amazing performers. Whoever wins will definitely deserve it. I had the privilege of seeing the show the night he was nominated so I got to congratulate him at the stage door and he was absolutely beside himself that he was even nominated. I think he will be thrilled no matter the outcome. And to him, I'm sure being asked to host the entire event is an award in itself.
I rather see Sean win over the overrated Doug Hodge.

The question on everyone's mind is: will Megan Mullally make an appearance?
Snooooooze.
A boring choice for the host.
And enough about the Newsweek article; the writer did make some valid points which of course no one here wants to admit to.
Very excited for this! His performance in Promises, Promises had made me a fan. Also: I'm with ljay, I'd Hayes over Hodge any day.
I think we've learned that nothing is going to make people watch the Tony Awards if they don't love theatre.
You could have Larry the Cable Guy host from the inside of a Nascar car with a naked woman on top with more naked women eating bacon off of her and sipping Miller High Life and people still woudln't watch.

^Very true. Rosie only pulled huge numbers because she was truly a phenomenon at the moment, and actually made people think they cared about B'way.

What's with some of these homophobic despicable comments here on this thread?
Sean will do just fine. He is the epitome of the quintessential complete performer and will handle things marvelously!
Go Sean!

Also, quite a few jealous posters too. He is not a fake and is Tony nominated in his role of Chuck Baxter. Jealous posters here, for sure!
Thank you BroadwayWorld for teaching me not every theatre lover gets sarcasm. Who knew?
Linda I find your post racist, homophobic, and epitomephobic.

I never had a bad taste in my mouth when reading the Advocate interview with Sean. Newsweek is a tabloid joke and not credible in journalistic taste at all. Newsweek has no integrity and no real sense at all.

Learn proper use of grammar. I never said racist. You did! Gotcha!
and
I can be quite sarcastic but with class and dignity. I have many gay/lesbian friends so homophobe, that I am not. Gotcha there too!
I try to be courteous and respectful in the threads I post in so you have a wonderful day!
Go Sean!

The "I have lots of gay friends" comment is so something a homophobe would say.
And you might want to fix your grammar before going after mine.
I'm off to brush my teeth. I have a weird taste in my mouth. I can't tell if it's this thread or my eventful weekend.
It's like watching someone at a funeral who thinks it's a surprise party.
Interesting choice for a host. But will he bring in new viewers?
Depends how many comps they give him.

Are they still trying to get more viewers? You'd think they'd have thrown in the towel by this point.
LindaT, you number one! Come back!

Sean Hayes was a VERY last-minute choice and, I would venture to guess, not the first choice. Wake up, you people in dreamland. The Tony Awards NEVER pick up huge ratings and, inevitably, one of the other big stations will be broadcasting some major sports event at the same time. I love the theatre and the New York theatre with all my heart, body and soul and have since 1955. I have always been of the opinion that PBS would be a much better venue and would make for a much better ceremony -- think how GREAT it would be for it to be commercial-free and that all awards could be presented properly. But I guess that's another dream deferred.
