I'm currently planning a trip to New York (I'm from England), and was wondering whether people preferred sitting in the orchestra or the front mezzanine for certain shows. They are:
Sweet Charity - Al Hirschfield theatre
Avenue Q - Golden Theatre
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Imperial Theatre
Little Women - Virginia Theatre
Hairspray - Neil Simon Theatre
Wicked - Gershwin Theatre
I know it is really down to individual preference, but any guidance would be great - I don't want to be miles away from the action, but at the same time I don't want to be able to see the microphones and sweat...

Avenue Q- I love the front row of the Mezzanine.
DRS- Mezzanine
Hairspray- Orchestra
Wicked- Either center orchestra or mezzanine, don't go for side orchestra, bad view.
Little Women- Orchestra

Sweet Charity-definately go for front Mezz...its a low hanging mezz and the stage is very wide..it's a gorgeous view
Avenue Q-I have sat in the front row of the orchestra and the back row of the mezz and both are great. I'd go orchestra though...
DRS-Sat in the front row at the Imperial this past Wed. and it was great...but it's a big show...so either orch. or mezz should be fine.
Little Women-Orchestra
Wicked- Orchestra (mezz is far away)
Hairspray-either should be fine, but i'd go orchestra...it's such a fun show...get as close as possible!
Have fun!

Sweet Charity - I would say orchestra or front mezz, so you can see the faces and the dancing
Avenue Q - front orchestra is best for this show
Hairspray - Center orchestra is good
Wicked - I think front mezz is best so you can see the whole spectacle that Wicked is. Just bring binoculars.

Posted: 4/23/05 at 2:54pmI think the first few rows of the front mez are greater than any orchestra seat, maybe except at the Minskoff, Nederlanded, and Gershwin.

Al Hirschfield theatre - Front Orch
Golden Theatre - Front Orch/All Mezz
Imperial Theatre - Front Mezz
Virginia Theatre - Front Mezz
Neil Simon Theatre - Front Mezz
Gershwin Theatre - Loge
The front row of the mezz at the Nederlanded is horrible.

Posted: 4/23/05 at 3:02pmI had lottery tickets for HAIRSPRAY, which is the very last row of the mezzanine and I thought my seats were fine! I was directly in the center, too. The mezzanine is steep enough so that no one should be blocking your view of the stage. And it's nice to see the entire picture for once. For example, seeing THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA from the front row was the most amazing thing, but now, I would love to see it from the mezzanine, just so I can see the entire spectacle at once.

The Shubert, I think has some of the worst sight lines on Broadway. The last 4 seats on either side of the first 12 rows orch has part of the stage obscured, and the balcony feels like skyview. I made the mistake of wearing bifocol glasses and had to keep lowering my head.
