I never got to see it, but one of my good friends was understudy to Rebecca Luker. Went on a couple of times as I recall. I think the CD is gorgeous.

The Secret Garden forgives No mediocrity, thats for sure.
It is great or terrible, because it is a demanding play.
Musically it's either operatic or sounds like screaming banshee's; depending on the performers ability.
"Dollopop" - The "Ghosts" - hmmm, very debatable.
As much as I Love the play, the 'Ghosts' hanging about were annoying. The TBTS production had them standing behind or near shrubs most of the time -so you knew they were ghosts and not living people. (my impression was they seemed like perverse trenchcoatish voyeurs)
I think Marsha Norman has alway's tried to make her nitch out of death; she mistakes the morbid as evidence of sophistication.
In fact, it only shows a lack of creativity.
The extremes; death and pain; are dramatic because they are absolute ends.
Creating drama out of more subtle events shows skill and talent; Norman has both - but needs to climb out of that putrid rut. All that was just to say, her ghost's weren't all she believes them to be.
13" - Playing Archibald; Would you like to have a spot on my site? I'd enjoy putting pics / bio's of Secret Garden performers.

I would say that SG is a show you defintely need to see live to fully appreciate it. AJ, I also saw the Theatre By the Sea production and it was simply gorgeous. I'd already owned the recording and thought it was a hauntingly beautiful score overall...some of the songs I found boring, but seeing the show is quite a different experience.

Not to be obnoxious, but shouldn't every show be seen live to fully appreciate it?
Saw Secret Garden on Bway. It was beautifully designed and quite moving. Way better than Will Rodgers Follies, which I think won the Tony that year.

I so agree, Effie. I remember sitting there wondering if "Secret Garden" would sweep or if "Once on This Island" would get a couple.
I was horrified that "Will Rogers" won. I didn't understand it then, I don't understand it now.
SG was a treasure- beautiful to hear, gorgeous to look at and what a super-talented cast.
