See What I Wanna See Available For Pre-Order
re: See What I Wanna See Available For Pre-Order#25
Posted: 2/12/06 at 10:00amConsidering that many shows really struggle to get it recorded, it is always amazing to see that MJL for some reason never seems to have that problem. Okay, the fabulous Sh-K-Boom records deserve praise for doing it. But for some reason or another MJL is really fortunate and fast with his recordings... Lucky us!

Well, the shows of Mr. LaChiusa's that HAVE been recorded are all, of course, brilliant. Obviously, producers realize his work is worthy of preservation for posterity. His scores take multiple listens to be fully grasped because they are so intricate, complex and well-thought out. But it seems to be presumptious to say that anywhere near his entire oeuvre has been recorded... because only about half of his output has been recorded and released. Compare that to his contemporaries like Adam Guettel, Jeanine Tesori or Ricky Ian Gordon, all of whom have had all of their major productions recorded and released. Those LaChiusa shows that regrettably have not been recorded and released (yet!):
LITTLE FISH (what a shame!)
THE PETRIFIED PRINCE
CHRONICLE OF A DEATH FORETOLD
LOVERS & FRIENDS
BREAK/AGNES/EULOGY OF MR. HAMM
THE HIGHEST YELLOW
And no announcement in re: BERNARDA ALBA recording, yet.
Why hasn't NONESUCH picked him up?

Posted: 2/12/06 at 1:47pmAlready, I'm anticipating a recording of Bernarda Alba. It just seems likely to happen. With the fact that the whole run sold out so quickly in addition to names like Phylicia Rashad and Daphe Rubin Vega, who might help create ineterest for a recording. I would not at all be surprised if it is recorded.

I hope to get this with my Barnes and Noble giftcard whenever it comes out!I am excited for this! I never saw the show or anything, so I was just wondering how the score is? Is it one that you just wanna listen to over and over (judging from people who did see the show)? How many songs does Idina sing? :)

It's a score that you'll fall in love with from the very first listen. Then, you'll just fall deeper with every listen after that.
If you're an idina fan you won't be dissapointed. The songs she sang in this show were full of much more substance then those in Wicked and RENT. They ranged in style so that so many facets of Idina's voice are captured. No out of control belting either. I think we've had enough of that.
Let's all remember that the magnificent Mary Testa will be recorded in full force here. Her big number The Greatest Practical joke is both hillarious and meaningful.

Idina has the best material in the show. The opening number is a solo for her, "Kesa", which has one of the best vamps I've EVER heard. It also has some of Mr.LaChiusa's best lyrics to date. She also sings the wonderfully jazzy title song, which is a decidedly different reading than Audra's. Her solo near the end of act 1, "No More", is one of LaChiusa's most angry and powerful songs. In Act II she sings the heartbreaking "Coffee". And since it is a 5-person cast she is prominently featured in all of the ensemble numbers.
It is an instantly lovable score, with majesty and brilliance to be mined for years to come upon repeated listening.
