Get a first rate playwright to help her craft the story of her life. It might be cool if she got into the seedier side of the story. The hockey player, if there was any drug use at all, ect."

I saw that show on Broadway, at the Walter Kerr, in the Fall of 1995.  Many many times, in fact.   It was glorious!  It was never intended to go more than a few months.  At one point they extended it to the end of the year, but then it ended up closing in early December.   I don’t recall anyone ever calling it a flop.  I know she certainly doesn’t consider it that way.

QueenAlice said: "I think the audience response at the Grammy's thing was blown a little out of proportion. There is usually a slight delay, particularly on live broadcasts in the editing sync, and the audience reaction shots are usually in relationship to something a few seconds before the moment they are supposedly reacting to and so I think sometimes are not really an accurate read. That may be why from LuPone's perspective she didn't see what we on television saw."

I absolutely agree.  I also blame the director for choosing to show a shot of an unenthusiastic section when I’m sure they could have found the ones who were giving her an ovation. Not to mention — there should have been an ALW reaction shot, and they completely missed that opportunity.   I think the audience response was cheering and wonderful but we at home saw a random row.  Annoying but not a big deal.  But still, Patti clearly doesn’t know that even happened.  And it’s probably better to leave it that way.

Patti LuPone Live! may have been a commercial flop, but I too found it an artistic success. Patti is in rare form on the recording and the songs are so interesting and some are very left-field for her. That record got me through high school! Especially HEAVEN. Patti's rendition of that gets me choked up every time! That being said, it would be incredible to have her do one that's based on her life story. Why doesn't she call her pal David Mamet? I can only imagine what they'd come up with!

Thank you for clarifying that about her one woman show! The only reason I said it was a flop was a 1996 article from NY Times, though largely sympathetic, listed the "short run" as one of the things in her career that didn't work out.

Glad to know the truth!
