Broadway Filled D23 Opening + a Death Becomes Her Joke!

Aug 16, 2026 — 5:34:18 PM

Let this be the end of NPH hosting things. This thing was embarrassing not only for lack of content, but also for the crime of being painfully unfunny. The opening was passable and quickly went down from there. No one looked or appeared rehearsed at all. Hilty got saddled with a second rate Randy Newman number (oof!) and Glenn Close messed up some lines creating some big confusion about a Cruella ride. I hope the performers except for NPH are dusting this off and laughing all the way to the b...

Re: Why was Bernadette Peters considered an ill fit for Gypsy?

Aug 13, 2026 — 10:19:56 AM

She wasn't a bad fit, she just wasn't your stereotypical Rose which most had by that point assumed needed to be played as a battleaxe (Daly and Midler both cemented that "idea" in the preceding era and every production except for the Mendes one I have ever seen plays her this way). Bernadette was lovely and challenged those battleaxe assumptions - in vocals, stature, and performance. She was mostly successful. I will say the Mendes production was horribly hamstrung by Arthur Laurents and the ...

September L. Davis --- THE APOLOGY TOUR

Aug 10, 2026 — 3:37:42 PM

MyMotherIsGeorgeWashington said: "Menken Fan said: "Look, I love Ana Gasteyer. But I think this whole September schtick isplayed out and tired at this point. The one joke has really worn out its welcome. Just me?"Just you."Not at all. I love Gasteyer (she remains my favorite Elphaba by a mile and, at the show I saw, the only professional lead in the cast of Once Upon A Mattress - everyone else was playing inside jokes/cutting up onstage as if they were doing community children's theatre in Po...

OH, MARY! Reviews

TaffyDavenport said: "Oracle is reporting a rumor that John Cameron Mitchell will be Cole's replacement, which would be pretty amazing."JCM will be great, but I was hoping for Charles Busch to step in and reimagine the role. But JCM clearly has a much larger commercial fan base.

OH, MARY! Reviews

KevinKlawitter said: "Licensing rights acquired by Dramatists Play Services"I hope and pray other artists who take on the role of Mary don’t just give bad Cole impersonations on this. I’m just having flashbacks to all the low rent productions of Die, Mommie, Die! where the lead’s performance just becomes a bad impersonation

The 78th Annual TONY Award Snubs!

Jun 9, 2025 — 11:05:36 AM

Dead Outlaw was robbed. But in general, I feel it’s being overlooked. I think this property is going to be extremely popular in regional theaters for a long time, maybe that is when it’ll hit its gold rush.

my best and worst

Jun 9, 2025 — 11:01:08 AM

Maybe I’m crazy but I love those projections/screens. They provided excitement, movement and were incredibly well designed. Honestly, some got it better than the actual show (the simple “ROSE”). More interesting to watch those than some of the dreadful performances. And I’ll be honest, Cynthia was so bad people didn’t know when she was joking. It was like there was a massive delay on an “applause” or “laugh” sign to direct the audience. The thing I’m most disappointed by was nobody will rewat...

Lea Michele, Aaron Tveit, and Nicholas Christopher in 2025 Chess Revival!

May 30, 2025 — 12:01:01 PM

The font choices here are giving Varsity/Heathers/Legally Blonde not 80s/Cold War/high stakes politics. Pink and red don’t make any sense (red alone would or with yellow/gold or blue to reference geographic politics). This whole look is only held together by a successful evocative underlying image, which looks cribbed from Sunset. Broadway has gotten so incredibly lazy in regard to designing artwork. This looks like a campaign for Victoria’s Secret Pink line. When will we see exciting art aga...

AUDRA GYPSY Reviews

May 21, 2025 — 4:06:19 PM

For my two cents, I thought Audra was the most well-acted Rose, creating a real character arc - not just the “bull in a China shop” from the last note of the overture that we often see. I thought her approach to the racial realities of her character during that period were well-articulated. Her and George C. Wolfe really worked that into this production masterfully and it added new layers I appreciated. Unfortunately, I don’t think Audra is the most well-sung Rose, the transitioning in her vo...

New Hadestown Casting

Mar 31, 2025 — 10:26:48 PM

Levi Kreis was magnificent on the tour. I know he’s getting his self-written project up and running, but I’m surprised he’s never done a stint in the Broadway production. He was magnificent!

Do You Collect Broadway Props?

Mar 11, 2025 — 11:45:37 AM

I’m a Sunset fan so I have…Every poster (minus one German one) for the RUG official productions in the 90s including opening night & limited editions. The Salome script, the cigarette case, pair of Betty Buckley’s shoes, notecards from stage hand working with Elaine, and fabric from Norma’s couch among other misc bits. The really cool stuff is the large oil portrait of Glenn Close and its frame from the set (a cheap plastic moulding). I also have two sconces that I repaired and restored to us...

Toni Collette's CHICAGO Screen Test

Feb 28, 2025 — 10:55:51 PM

My belief is that Renee was the Miramax golden girl of the time and her casting was pushed by certain producers. I also think Roxie has to have a certain blandness and timidity to contrast with Velma and at least in that clip, Toni doesn’t have that.

MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN On Broadway in 2025?

Feb 27, 2025 — 10:00:59 PM

$25 million for this??? I’ll be honest, that sticker price is appalling unless they’ve decided to replicate the full southern manor onstage. I felt it worked pretty bare bones at the Goodman. What needed to be fixed was the book.

Why is Oh! Mary! not selling out for return of Original cast?

Feb 27, 2025 — 9:56:49 PM

If my mom weren’t a massive Cole fan, I wouldn’t be returning to bring her with. As much as I loved the show, it was definitely a “one and done” for me. I think without a lot of the surprises and shocks, it will play different. Others may feel the same way.

Donald Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center

Feb 7, 2025 — 10:38:22 PM

It’s easy to call something a distraction and assume legalities will correct everything until it affects whether you take home a paycheck. It may not hurt some of these board members, but I’m so sorry for any employees at the KC who can’t sleep tonight because they don’t know if they’ll have a job in a week. These “distractions” have direct and traumatic effects that shouldn’t be minimized.

Donald Trump Takes Over the Kennedy Center

Feb 7, 2025 — 9:56:48 PM

“The President hasn’t learned the lines you’d like to hear, he won’t join your clubs… he’ll simply take control as you disappear.” These paraphrased lines from Evita are just ringing through my head right now. Scary times, friends. I’m so sorry for all at the Kennedy Center caught up in this madness.

Jennifer Lopez to Star in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN Film

Jan 14, 2025 — 10:40:14 PM

Jeffrey Karasarides said: "Appears to be a common thing with film adaptations of Kander & Ebb musicals."This is incredibly true, but also incredibly sad. The choice to do “reality=no singing” is just lazy and easy at this point. I wasn’t a huge fan of Emilia Perez, but I was hoping Spider Woman would integrate non-Aurora songs more in that style. Even Fosse wouldn’t have repeated the Cabaret approach again, he would’ve found new ways to integrate music, dance, and story.
