Anyone know of one currently playing on or off Broadway?
To give you a sense of my taste, I loved Next to Normal and Spring Awakening. I want something with a book and score that make me feel, as these two shows did.
Am asking because I'm heading to NYC soon to see "Good People" and I want to also see a powerful musical while I'm there. Thanks!

Hmmm ... Had not considered "People in the Picture" due to the reviews by both critics and folks here. You enjoyed it, though? Music, too?
The People in the Picture is cliched and cheesy. In terms of musicals from this season, the pickings are very slim, based on your criteria.
You'd be better off seeing something like The Normal Heart, which does everything you describe.

Adam, just read the reviews for that after seeing your post and it does sound VERY worthwhile. Thanks for the idea.

I really enjoyed it! I didn't think it was cheesy at all- the emotions seem to come from a realistic, natural place. Cliched? Yes, I'll give you that, but the score was beautiful (though nothing like N2N or SA). It was also the first musical I've ever seen my mother cry during.
