SARAH BRIGHTMAN To Star in Australian SUNSET BLVD.
 Jun 22 2024, 12:04:49 AM
This production is formally presented as "Opera Australia & GWB Entertainment, by arrangement with THE REALLY USEFUL GROUP"

Some context: the theatre in Melbourne that Opera Australia use for their Melbourne seasons is currently closed for refurbishment, and so they are having to try alternative programming and special events at other theatres to try and keep the money coming in. To make things worse, they had expected the refurbishment to begin a year earlier than it did and so have al

There's a sort of altar with candles and a dark mass but it's not clear at all what it is, if you didn't already know the details of the story you would be very confused, especially when the undertaker finally appears. But I'd consider that, and most of the production's flaws, to be due to weaknesses in the writing that every director has to fight with.

Yes, ‘Suffering’ was quite uncomfortable. They roll Norma in on trolley and spin her around a lot, but you can’t really tell whether it’s actually her or just a dummy, so when she climbs off at the start of the next scene you almost feel sorry for Sarah having to sit through it.

I’ve just returned from tonight’s performance, and I loved it. An exciting, occasionally bizarre, combination of melodrama and camp.

The production design was impressive, with a good amount of spectacle. I lost track of how many costume changes Norma had. Some interesting choreography choices that stand out a bit too much, especially in the final moments. And ‘The Lady’s Paying’ is a bit of a disaster.

2024 Tony Awards

In regards to clearly leading actors who are not above the title, if the producers of a show choose not to petition, can the nominating committee make the change anyway? Surely they wouldn’t reward sneaky attempts at ‘category fraud’

So long as there's a rousing production number about peanut allergies, I'm in.

The Forbidden Broadway parody from when it opened was pretty brutal yet spot on, comparing the lyrics of Sun and Moon to that of a Hallmark card.

UK Theatre Criticized For
 Jul 9 2023, 09:07:59 PM

You'd be amazed how many people rock up to the theatre (or cinema etc.) with absolutely no clue what they're about to see. Also, just because it's a classic, every performance will be someone's introduction to the material.

Interesting that he ignores all the criticism that Jesus Christ Superstar got from all sides back in the day...

WGA strike impact on the 2023 Tonys
 May 28 2023, 09:12:16 PM

I had hoped that the writers would have been able to use this as leverage to get their work (and those of their fellow behind the scenes creatives) actively featured and recognised during the broadcast instead of being hidden in an ad break. Ah well.

Speaking of the Isabelle Stevenson Award, why hasn't Seth Rudetsky already received it by now?

Broadway shows are becoming embarrassingly cheap-looking

Thank you SO MUCH for reminding me of this website's hilarious language filter!

New Cast Album Signing In The Theater?
 Jan 6 2023, 09:24:12 PM

Could be SIX? It's apparently coming out on disc on February 3rd; it's popped up on Amazon and some other retailers but haven't heard any official confirmation which is a bit odd for a production that's been all about social engagement.
