I was just watching the Jennifer Lopez E! True Hollywood Story, and it struck me that the movie "Selena" could be made into a sucessful musical. Just think of all the costumes and dance numbers that could be incorporated. I think it could be GREAT!

I do not think the Quintanilla family would
allow Selena the musical to develop.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 8:52amActually, you're very own Al, saw this pile of junk in Los Angeles, a few years ago. I'm very hazy on details,(as it's something one tries to block out) but suffice it to say, that it made The 10 commandments seem like the Producers. It is one of only two shows in my life, that I have walked out on during intermission.

So it was good then?
re: Selena: The musical#12
Posted: 10/26/04 at 11:59amI believe it originated at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston. At least, I remember a lot of talk about it at the time. It probably went the way of several other TUTS premieres including Ninfa! (based on the life of a restaurant owner famous only in Houston) and Chaplin.

Actually, I believe the Quintanilla family (or at least Selena's dad) was developing a stage bio-show a year or so after her death...maybe it was the tour that was cancelled. I was quite the Selena fan (spanish stuff only) at the time.
Given the current hype over Latin artists (or at least the anglocized versions of them ala Shakira) in the mainstream, it would not be surprising if a Latin-music inspired musical did hit the stage. Also, we must consider the current tendency of Broadway to frame "new" musicals on things that are "known" in pop culture, or to the tourist audience- it is a business after all.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 5:22pmI like the movie, but I doubt the Quintanilla family would like this to be made in a musical. They would probably be expected to go to at least one performance, and would you want to sit through a show that ends in your daughter's death? It was probably difficult enough with the movie, and I doubt it would be a good idea to market the show with T-Shirts and other items as well.

Yeah I understand what you mean about having to sit through the musical, knowing that the end would result in your daughter's death, and how hard that would be. But I read this interview with Selena's father (before or during production of the movie (I forget which)) and he said he was very excited about the movie because it was celebrating the amazing life, however short, of his incredible daughter, and all she had to offer in her personality, and charisma on stage.
If the musical were to be written again, with a actually "good" score (opposed to what was written before on the tour), I think the main objective of the musical could be to celebrate her life, and how amazing she was.
Either way, I doubt it will be made. Just wishful thinking on my part, because I too (yay Kchenoweth fan!) was a huge fan of her stuff. :)

Posted: 12/16/06 at 2:57pmI actually saw the musical and I have the script. It was pretty good! On my trip to Corpus Christi this summer, I went to the Q-Productions studio and talked to Selena's dad about it.
