Posted: 3/26/05 at 8:12pmI just saw Dirty Rotten Scoundrels the other day and I have to say the set was so beautiful! I loved how the stage turned and such :). This is probably stupid but I was just curious what are some of your favorite sets? I also enjoyed seeing phantom of the opera.

DRS is good.
I love Les Mis' set because it is so bare but yet it works so well.
(but of course, Les Mis is my favorite show)
I also liked the set of Avenue Q - esp. up close...

Posted: 3/26/05 at 8:16pmI loved the last revival of Cabaret's set. Minimal, but cool. I also liked Wicked's--yeah, shoot me if you must.

I actually found the sets for DRS were pretty boring and unimaginative... maybe it's just me.
The Light In The Piazza has the most wonderful sets of the current shows, I think.

It;s just you...

Jk, like Wicked's too...
Oh, yeah - Cabret and Urinetown..
The thing to me is: either go minimal and do it well, or go extravagent - but don't be a bItch and go half way.
(write that down)

Cabaret? They didn't really have ANY sets. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show...

That's the point...the set was a bare set...someone still designed it that way...

Posted: 3/26/05 at 8:25pmOh I also enjoyed the Avenue Q set! I thought it was so neat how they pulled the rooms out of the windows..wait..that didn't sound right but you understand :P. Hehe and the HUGE kate monster and empire state building..so cool!

And therefore it's one of the best sets you've ever seen? Because it was totally bare set? Interesting.

Phantom of the Opera
And you have to admit Cats had a cool set.

No...because of the way it worked with the show.
If they used a somewhat bare set for, say, wicked - not so good.
But think about it...what is a Cabaret? A Stage - a bare stage...
The world is empty - and so is the stage.

I see your point and I loved the show, the stage and everything about it. I was just wondering why anyone would pick the set as one of the best they've seen.
I see you point though, thanks for explaining.

Posted: 3/26/05 at 8:35pmThe thing about CABARET was that the entire theatre was the set. In my opinion, it was AMAZINGLY effective and probably one of the reasons I loved it so much. You step through the door and your instantly transported to a cabaret in Pre-Nazi Berlin. (This is why I don't like how Roundabout basically left it this way and did more shows there... just seems like a "dinner theatre" to me when there's not cabaret involved in the actual show...)

Just like Maybethistime said...
but it wasn't my favorite...like I said, Les Mis - because it was bare yet full...
As I said, either go minimal and do it well, or go extravagent - but don't be a bItch and go half way.
Cats set was awesome...esp the nelarged newspapers, etc...Front row for that show was awesome!

Posted: 3/26/05 at 8:52pmAvenue Q definetly! I just saw it again today, and I really took a good look at the set...and it's just so detailed (little BBQ grill, window fan, laundry hanging) and really is a character of it's own.

The set of one of my dearest guilt pleasures, Titanic. It tilted! And it was stunningly beautiful while being complicated. Unfortunatly, the touring production failed miserably without it.
Also Sweeney Todd had a stunning set as well.
