Hi Guys! My high school just announced that our fall musical for next year will be Seussical, and auditions are next week. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little bit about the female roles in the show. Anything you could tell me would really help. Thanks so much!!! :)
Gertrude-Awkward, in love with Horton. Has a very sweet ballad and grows a big tail that she can't walk with. Mayzie-Arrogant and beautiful, very belty. Bird Girls-Sort of like the Little Shop Urchins
Gertrude is the biggest female lead, unless they cast a female Cat. Gertrude is a really cute part, she wants Horton to notice and love her, but she is so plain with her one feathered tail... so she takes pills for it to grow.. bla bla bla... You can be creative with the character... Her one song, All for you, I think should be belted and with alot of passion. it goes pretty high.. listen to the CD. Mayzie is a supporting and a lot of fun, she's self centered, very spontaneous and kinda sexy, whatever you want... a lot of attitude and stage presence.. she has a few songs. she also should be a really good actress because her character changes a lot in the 2nd act, when she sees Horton with the egg... it's a good emotional bit. The Sour Kangaroo is very soulful and is a vocal powerhouse with lots of attitude, it's funny and is a great supporting part with some of the catchiest songs...
In addition to the characters already listed, there's also the Mayor's wife, which is a pretty small role. She plays the mother of the lead boy, JoJo. She gets some funny lines and sings a duet with the Mayor ("How to Raise a Child"), as well as part of "Solla Sollew."
There are a few other roles that are non-gender-specific, like Yertle the Turtle (who is a bass on the CD but was played by an alto when I was in it), Thing #1 and Thing #2, The Cat in the Hat (who is almost always on stage), and I even saw a local high school production in which JoJo was played by a girl. Then there are ensemble roles, of course, in the Whos, the Hunches, the Citizens of the Jungle, and Circus Animals.
I actually hate Seussical. My school and camp did it. All I can say is, thank god my camp does more than one show a summer so I wasn't stuck with Seussical.
Thanks for all of your help everybody! Seussical wasn't exactly my first choice for a show, but its going to be my senior show, so I'd hate to miss out on the experience of it all just because of that. I think I'm going to try out for Gertrude and then hope for the best lol. Thanks again everybody!!!!
Yay!! I hope you get Gertrude! I just finished seussical at my school and loved playing that part! The musical isn't the greatest but it's a lot of fun, and there's a surprisingly large amount of work that can be done with Gertrude--she can be unexpectedly complex if you dig. Best of luck and if you have any other questions about the show, feel free to PM.
"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being."

Why does it suck so bad? I mean you just made this overly dramatic comment (now I know it is a theater website so I will allow some of it) and had nothing to back it.
Can I ask you? If you were offered a part in the show and it was going on tour would you turn it down cause it SUCKED? Or would you kill yourself? I mean I dont think that many actors do a show or not cause they think it sucks or rocks! They do it to get the experience and the knowledge of what it takes to be an actor.
Personally, the show was a bunch of fluff and stuff but I still enjoyed it. And I would rather see a HS do something like Sessical which can be somewhat forgiving then see then murder something deep and meaningful like Parade or The Wild Party.
