Okay, so Tuesday night I went to Seussical audition and for the audition I sang "The Military" by General Ghengus Kahn Schmitz, but to show some range I did a reading of Horton the Elephant(Who happens to be the lead), well I got called back for Sunday and I have to learn "Alone In The Universe", which is a little tough for me but it'll be exciting, so please keep your fingers crossed for me.
Also, I went to see Hairspray on Broadway yesterday and I loved it. You all are right it was amazing. Everybody was hilarious, especially Bruce Valanch, who I never really liked all that much but now I think he's amazing. He made some jokes about Paula Abdul, and Britney Spears during "Timeless to Me" it was hilarious, then he made a joke about there only being 6 jews in the house including himself and Todd Susman, then he even pointed at people in the audience.
Everybody was great but my sister and I noticed that this ensemble girl Shelly had the best voice and she should really be in a show where she could have a lead and really show off that voice.
Carly Jibson was really good, but I still think Marisa Jaret Winokur was better, sorry. Carly was real nice at the stage door though and me and my sister had our picture taken with her.
Bruce, Todd, and whoever played Lil' Inez were all really nice too, but the nicest person was one of The Dynamites, Carla J. Hargrove, she stopped and talked to everybody and signed and took all the pictures. She was so pleasant.
Everybody should definitly see the show, it wasn't my favorite but it was great and a lot of fun. I don't know what my favorite song was, probably "You Can't Stop The Beat".

Posted: 5/19/05 at 3:45pmyou sang and recited material from seussical at an audition for seussical??? did they ask you to audition with a song from the show?
re: Seussical/ Hairspray#2
Posted: 5/19/05 at 3:48pmThat's a little ris-kay. I'd recomend using a piece from a different show, because now they might only consider you for the role of the General (if it's from the show, haven't seen Seusical).

For some reason, it's becoming more welcoming to sing something from a show you are auditioning for. The past few shows I have auditioned for actually asked us to sing 16 bars of something from the show. I think it's ok in my opinion and as long as the director is cool with I say go for it.
I really like Suessical and I love Alone in the Universe! Good luck with auditions I hope you get a good part!

Well, thank you ShuQ and Bwaybaby109. I know it's a risk singing a song from the show but if you know what role you want then I think it's better to show them what you can do for that role than to go in and sing something that has nothing to do with your character. If you noticed in the recent open casting call for Tracy in Hairspray they wanted people to come prepared to sing Good Morning Baltimore, so it's not that weird to sing a song from the show. Anyway, I'm an actor not a singer so for me it was better to practice that song so I could get it right and act it out then to just sing something off topic and just hope for the best. It wasn't til the last minute that I chose to read for Horton instead of the General, because I figured that it would show off my range as an actor and that I might as well go for the lead instead of just settling for a supporting role(which I often do) and it paid off because I got callback for Horton, not the General.
CATSNY, why do you think it's strange to audition with a reading from the show your auditioning for. I know people usually sing a different song but everybody read from Seussical.

Posted: 5/20/05 at 9:28amA friend of mine, very talented theater person. has been trying to get me to try musical theater. I'm not convinced...Anyway, he said I would be perfect as Horton...(He's heard me sing karoake only).... so was that compliment?

Yes Mikewood, that is a compliment. horton is a great part..
jarred~ it is usually frowned upon to sing and or read something from the show you are auditioning for, unless it is specified in the audition information. You typically want to choose something that shows off your ability and if you have a specific part you want, choose a song that is similar to what the character performs. Best of luck to you though.
"Someday I'm going to have a baby and I'm gonna name her L'il Mimi Marquez and I and will sing to her every day and when she's a toddler I will say "L'il Mimi Marquez, clad only in a bubble diaper, will perform her famous play pen handcuff dance to the sounds of breast milk being pumped!" ~Kringas
re: Seussical/ Hairspray#9
Posted: 5/20/05 at 1:05pmit's usually seen as egotistical to do something from the same show. that said, some producers/directors ask for something for a show because they see no need in seeing the other stuff people can do. i've done both types of auditions.
re: Seussical/ Hairspray#10
Posted: 5/20/05 at 1:08pmAs a director (straight plays only), I generally request monologues not from the show. I'd rather not see what their pre-conceived character choices are but what they consider their range.
re: Seussical/ Hairspray#11
Posted: 5/21/05 at 2:35amdarcy and mikewood, very good points, but as a director what if you were casting for The Glass Menagerie and somebody shows up and reads from A Midsummer Nights Dream to try and impress you, you might think they are great and cast them but then they can't leave that theatrical style of classical acting and they never capture the realness of the Glass character. I'm not trying to be a wise ass, I really am curious what you look for. Anyways, singing that song didn't really hurt me or help me because I got a call back for a different character, which happens to be the lead character. So, I got lucky. However wouldn't it be easier and take less time if people came prepared with a song from the show because then you wouldn't need to call back so many people.

Posted: 5/27/05 at 2:33amWoo-Hoo!!!!! I got the part of General Ghengus Kahn Shmitz. I am so excited and so nervous at the same time. This is only my second musical and this will be my first time singing a solo in public. It will definitly be a summer of learning and growth for me. I can't wait.

jarred,
I'm sorry I'm only answering this question now but I kind of forgot about this thread.
I will specifically answer your question:
For auditions for Glass Menagerie I would request a contemporary dramatic monologue not from the play, although Tennessee Williams would be fine.
I will be directing "Over the River and Through the Woods" by Joe Dipietro in September and I called for a humorous or touching monologue about family not from the play.
