I saw a great production of The Taming of The Shrew set in 1950's America, and I was wondering if any of you guys had seen good Shakespeare productions set in unconventional time periods?
When I went to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2014 they had a production of The Comedy of Errors set in 1920/30's Harlem with an all- black cast and everyone in Zoot-suits etc. It was stylish, but didn't add anything more to the play.
In 2018 Vancouver's Bard on the Beach did a version of As You Like it that they will be reviving this year set in the swinging 60's and interpolating a bunch of Beatles songs. It did well for them and they even toured it. I remember it being a bit corny, but I'll probably go see it again this summer.
Edit: Just remembered that the only production of Troilus and Cressida I've seen, again at Bard on the Beach, moved the action from thr Trojan War to the American Civil War and everyone spoke with fake Southern accents like they were in Gone With the Wind. Again a good excuse for great costumes.
