Amen. I agree.
I saw Ribgy when I was 5. I am now an adult. She has done FOUR Broadway engagements over two tour and even filmed it for video (where she could not have been more obviously lipsynced or dubbed certain lines).. I loved her when I saw her each time, but pleae.. LET. IT. GO.

I think it is rather nice that she is doing a farewell tour. I agree, I would like to see someone new in the role, but I absolutely LOVE her. Never a disappointment, always gives a FABULOUS show.
Not only is this her farewell tour, but 2004 marks the 100th Anniversary of the play. It turns 100 on December 27, 2004.

I think a new revival is completely unnecessary. I'm sorry but I guess I'd just like to see something else revived or see a new musical for that matter instead of see Cathy Rigby fly around Broadway in her third farewell engagement.

gherbert, I don't thinka revival is unneccessary. I think a RIGBY revival is unnecessary. They are very low budget, done with very small casts and are totally laughable when billed as "state of teh art" as was her last production. I read that and began laughing hysterically. State of the art my @$$. They are nothing by regional theatre productions that she tours and sticks in a Broadway house for a month.
There has not been an open ended, Broadway quality mounting of the show since the 1979 sandy Duncan revival.
Peter Pan the play is turning 100 and the musical turns 50. If Rigby intended on an aniversary revival, she never should have done the last one and brought it to Broadway or videoed it. She should have waited till now and videoed teh aniverasry revival.
I want a revival of Peter Pan sans Rigby and with an actual Broadway level budget and actual state of the art technology booked into a theatre for an open ended run and designed to play a sit down engagement with an actual male playing Peter and using the script by John caird and Trevor Nunn as the book. THEN I would want to see it.. THAT would be a good staging.
Side note -- the USA is teh last major theatre market to have not seena male Peter ina first class production. In fact, in London, males have played teh role in the last few major mountings of Peter Pan.

The Peter Pan's Flight attraction at Walt Disney World is very underrated. You're flying in that boat. Wendy is shivering on the gang plank. Very underrated.

God, this is freaky. Ten minutes ago, I was walking home and thought "You know...I could see a PETER PAN revival in the near future." I was humming "Neverland", too.

Ms Rigby, singing "I Won't Grow Up!" wearing an estrogen patch under her green tights, her 20 year old grandkids in the audience, and her husband home poppin' Viagra and countin' her stash of greenbacks ... gives me the willies. Cathy, dear, move on to a "Nunsense" tour or "Menopause The Musical."

See, I did not get a chance to see Cathy the first 3 times (or whatever number), so I am kind of excited. Peter Pan is not one of my favorite shows, though.

To be fair, she really was quite good in the part. I liked her production better than the Duncan one, and honestly don't remember it being as cheap looking as was posted here. But critically, it has been 6-7 years. She could mentor another young star in the part, pass the torch, or the Flying by Foy. Some great opera singers have done this. Why not?

I saw her in the role back in 1999 and she was quite good. My little brothers are also big fans of the DVD of the production. I just think it's getting a little old. Like broadwayguy said, let's get a teenage male, who is actually believable as Peter Pan, play the role.

With the mention of Neverland it brought thoughts of Michael Jackson! AHhh, imagine him in the role and I bet he would love to do it if he was asked

Doesn't it seem like old age is the only flaw that it is still politically correct to mock? We can't mock race, religion, weight, handicap (mental or physical) but anyone approaching 50 is suddenly fair game. Or isn't it only females who are targeted for this scorn?
You can't read anything about Madonna, Cher, Vanna White, Marti Webb, or any of a number of menopausal celebs, that doesn't seem fixated on the "over the hill" quality. Aging is treated as if its a big sin someone has committed, or a talent you have let slip somehow. Even if someone keeps in shape and can still sing like they did in their 20s - the "long in the tooth comments" are still out there.
Just a thought.

I am not attacking Rigby's age off of teh stage at all.
theatre and acting revolves around your appearance. You have to be physically believeable as the character you are playing.. Rigby is getting up in years and the role should have been handed off LONG ago... if for no other fact that she has driven thats how into the ground doing it so many times.. and in penny-pinching productions none the less.
They better have an ACTUAL budget for this tour.. not going into their children's biggie bank and whipping out a 5 dollar bill to stage a "first class" tour

having grown up w/ the Mary Martin TV version (she was 47 at time of taping) I always thought the role was written for a middle aged female.

I'm not making fun of her age, I'm making fun of the fact that her only way to get a gig is to own the rights to a show she did 30 years ago and keep casting herself in the lead role, a role,
I have no problem pointing out that would seem to be most effective played with at least a hint of youth. I don't know a lot of 50-some year-old women who can still pass themselves off as twelve year-old boys.

Do you think that every time Rigby and husband want to remodel the house, they mount a production of PETER PAN? Maybe they're raising funds for a new lap pool or something.

I think decrying age-ism re Miss Rigby (or Marti in "Song and Dance" for that matter) is a PC stretch. Creating art involves talent, merit, alchemy of role/performer. This is not about trying to put someone out to pasture, as is the case in corporate America. This is about the valid match of actor and part. Long may Ms. Rigby trod the boards -- hey, develop a new vesion of "Harold and Maude" for her dotage, I'll shout brava. But her return to THIS role asks theater consumers to look at what they're paying for, and invites scruitny of the appropriateness of the endeavor. I think the audience is entitled to judge, and will do so with the ultimate thumbs up/thumbs down: moolah. My remarks may be glib, but I stand by my right to question if the 50something Rigby is the best Peter for my hundred bucks.

I find her somewhat chilling in the role, there is a scary quality to her cuteness, I've always found the various productions to be off-putting, and don't get me started on Mary Martin.
