#0Show/Rush Recommendations
Posted: 3/7/06 at 1:17am

My friend and I are staying at my house in northern New Jersey for spring break and are planning to go into the city at least once for a show. I'm looking for recommendations for good shows with good rushes, regular or student. We want to see something neither of us has seen, so that means no Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Avenue Q, or The Light in the Piazza. I've seen Rent, but am definitely willing to see it again because it's been a while and she really wants to see it. I've seen about ten or so Broadway shows, but I've never gotten rush tickets or done lotteries for a show before, so I'm not experienced with it. Is it possible to attempt more than one lottery in a night if you don't win one? Are there good shows with less popular lotteries that would be easier to win?

Thanks for any recommendations!

http://www.talkinbroadway.com has rush/lottery policies.

http://www.broadwaybox.com has most of the ticket discounts.

Crap, I forgot to list Piazza under shows I've seen. (Graduation present.) I'll fix that. (Wonderful show, though.)

I would suggest student rushing for Jersey Boys. :)

Rush for Jersey Boys. Lately they've been giving out seats in the first couple rows, but off to the side, and the view is amazing. I've seen the show three times for far less than a full price ticket.

There's really no "best day" to go. Being there this past couple of days, there were times when it was super crowded, and time when it was a bit empty. I would definitely suggest getting there at least an hour before they go on sale. It's pretty warm in the theatre and they let you sit on the floor.

They do have an odd rush policy, but I got tickets Friday, and the day before yesterday (Sunday). Saturday I got standing room because both rushes had been sold. Sunday they made us wait outside, and I'm sure a lot of people didn't want to wait there, so that's why we got tickets. But Friday we got row B to the side, and Sunday I got row A, about three seats in. The rush seats are really really great.

Have fun! This show is amazing.

Lottery for spelling bee can sometimes be kind of easy, usually on days when Wicked doesn't have a show, like the sunday night show.

I'm still wondering if it's possible to rush more than one show in a night. I THINK (key word THINK) I've heard of people doing that, but I could be remembering something fuzzy.

Yes, it's possible for SOME shows which do their lotteries at slightly different times. You need to have a look at the policies of the shows you're interested in seeing and see if any two of them will allow you the time to run between them to play both. Keep in mind that spring break week is going to be super busy at lottos for ALL shows. Good luck!

I was in the city to do a couple rush shows yesterday (Wednesday). I figured it would be a breeze but damn if I was wrong. The mat lotto for Wicked had about 150 people and the night lotto had about 200. Even Spelling Bee got about 60 people. I was told some schools are already on break so that was the deal with crowds, but I was real suprised. Im gonna wait till April to do some more lottos so I dont have to deal with Spring Break crowds.

I am planning on going to NYC next Friday (I know, Friday's a bad day to go, but regardless) and I want to do a student rush/lottery/SRO. Something rather easy to win... Does Spelling Bee have SRO? Is Spamalot's SRO tickets still as impossible as ever? What show guarantees me tickets?

Thanks,
~JKor

I've done the lotto for three shows in a night. Assuming it's a night with all shows 8pm curtain, you can:

5-5:30pm Hairspray lotto
5:30-6pm Rent/ Avenue Q/ DRS/ Wicked lotto (you can lotto ONE of these, but they're all during this time slot) (fyi DRS and Ave Q are located right across the street from each other, but the guys running them won't allow you to have your name in both)
6-6:30pm Spelling Bee lotto

**edit because lotto and rush are two different words. :)
