Doing a quick side trip enroute to visit my grandkids. Scheduled arrival at JFK on Wed Oct 2. I have a ticket to see Once Upon a Mattress on Thurs night, Oct 3. I didn't book anything on Wednsday due to the later arrival- wasn't sure if my timing would allow me to make it, esp with all the delays lately. I'm staying at the Hotel St James and just doing carryon, so no waiting for bags. I was hoping to get there, and then walk to a close theater and get a last minute single ticket or maybe a small venue show. But a lot of things seem to start at 7 pm.
Oh Mary is playing close by, but it's sold out. And as interesting as that show would be, not paying $400 reseller prices.
Any suggestions? Or should I just go get a nice dinner and relax after a traveling all day.

Not sure what time you arrive but Cabaret plays at 8PM on Wednesdays and Hadestown, Suffs, The Notebook and Back to the Future play at 7:30. So does Oh Mary. Tickets will probably open up closer to your date if house seats get released back to the box office but the pricing for good seats at that show is insane.

It's definitely worth seeing Suffs if you can make a 7:30 curtain, and it's only a block from your hotel. You can use code SUFFS19TH for discounted tickets at the box office or online.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought I included my arrival time - I don't land at JFK until 6 pm. I've heard anything from 30 min to an 1.5 hrs getting in- that's why I haven't pre purchased anything. Since I'm only looking for a single seat maybe I'll get lucky, both ticket and traffic wise

From JFK I always take the Air Train to Jamaica and subway (usually the E train) into Manhattan. I plan for 90 minutes from when I step off the plane to when I walk into my hotel or theatre in the Times Square area. That's with carry on bags. If your flight lands at 6:00 you may just make an 8:00 show. If you have to drop things off at your hotel first, you may not make it.
For start times, it seems many shows start earlier (7 or 7:30) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 8pm still seems to be the most common on Wednesdays due to there being a matinee that day.

Personally I do. The E departs every few minutes. It's usually a 35 minute ride. I have a choice several different stops in the Times Square area depending on where I want to go.
For the LIRR, it's a faster ride, but you may likely have to wait longer for the next train. Also you end up in Penn Station and have a longer walk.
