1. Gone with the Wind -- the Musical (including a subplot that shows the slaves in a positive light). Apparently, the Mitchell trust will NEVER license GWTW for a Broadway adaptation, which I find unfortunate. Tam Mutu looks right for the part of Rhett Butler.
2. Lincoln and Douglass -- a serious musical about Abraham Lincoln's growing respect for Frederick Douglass. The show would contrast Douglass's marriage to an illiterate former slave with Lincoln's hellacious marriage. It would show the similarities between the two self-taught men, and show that the major difference between their prospects was the accident of skin color. It would also explore the pulls and tugs in the North regarding slavery, and cover ground similar to the Daniel Day Lewis movie. (If I knew how to write a musical, I'd write it myself).
3. A comedic musical about Talmudic debates, as long as it's respectful. Some Talmudic discussions are humorous and others are spine-tingling (e.g., the comment that we can no more know a particular something than we can the sex of a child in the womb).
4. A musical about the original Star Trek or Star Trek the Next Generation characters. It would DEFINITELY have to avoid the insanity of destroying the planet Vulcan, as the Chris Pine Star Trek did.
5. A year ago, I'd have said a musical adaptation of Daphne duMaurier's "Rebecca," but I'm much more hopeful now.
Audrey, the Phantom Phanatic, who nonetheless would rather be Jean Valjean, who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons.
