I"m sorry for the annoying question, but any help will be appreciated.
My director for our high school shows asked for some suggestions for next years musical. But, I'm stuck and can't think of any good ones that would be appropriate for high school. Our seniors this year carry most of our talent. Which really sucks. There are tons of girls who try out. Not many good ones, but there are a few. The boys are the real problem. There are only like 5 guys who have a little talent (being nice), and the rest suck. We just did Grease, so I thought it was about time to do a good musical. But one that also draws a crowd. Our theater is also amazing, it holds 1200 people and the stage is really big, with a orchestra pit. It is really a shame it is put to waste with another crappy high school production. I know this might seem impossible, but any help will be appreciated.

Posted: 3/10/07 at 5:12pmThere's always the old high school standbye they haul out when they're short on guys and have talented girls (because you can shift the casting around)- "Once Upon a Matress"(ditto for "Beauty and the Beast). You can make these shows as 'big' or as 'small' as you need them to be and they work no matter which way you twist them (guess that's why "Mattress" is number 3 in popularity for high schools and colleges to stage). "Fame" works, if you use the right variation ( this show is the one piece that actually comes with permission to remove a particular song, should the director choose to), or you could fall back on "The Sound Of Music" which always has a built in following since all ages can see it. Let us know what you end up with. Good luck!

As long as you have some dance talent and don't mind making some women sing tenor, you can do Thoroughly Modern Millie with about 6 guys. (I can tell you from experience.)
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum doesn't have too many guys.
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Wow! 5 guys. I saw a disastrous No, No, Nanette with exactly 5 guys in the cast. It was so bad, I'd rather forget it. Why not check the Samuel French, Dramatists Play Service, Dramatic Publishing Company, Tams Witmark, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Music Theatre International websites for suggestions?
Have you considered Really Rosie? It's short, but can be done with a small cast. A My Name is Alice is an all female cast.
When I was in High School, the shows were Of Thee I Sing, Camelot, Cinderella and Down in the Valley. The Fantasticks can be done with women in men's roles. My partner was in it a few years ago. He played the boy's father, and the girl had a mother instead of a father. It worked. The Actor, the Man Who Dies and the Mute were all done by women, and the El Gallo was hearing impaired. It was a terrific production.
Good luck.
