Showtime's Broadway TV Project

Hollywood Reporter says that Veteran playwright/TV writer Theresa Rebeck has been tapped to write Showtime's Broadway series project.

The untitled project, a brainchild of Steven Spielberg, chronicles the development of an original Broadway musical, from the inception of the idea through the opening night and everything in between.

If the project goes to series, the intention is to take the musical at the center of the show to the stage.

Thoughts? Had anyone heard of this for? I tried searching for it but found nothing. I think this could be very great, or very terrible.

There was a thread about this a while ago. (at least I think there was...) But it seems like a really cool idea to me! Definately the first of it's kind. I hope it turns out well.

Hmmm ... sounds like they're trying to play catch-up with HBO's Project Greenlight which did the same thing for films.

^^^ Except, wasn't PG a reality show/documentary type thing? It's my understanding that this Showtime show is a scripted series about the creation of a Broadway musical, while at the same time the subject of the scripted series is being created and opening shortly after. Which sounds cool, although it could really backfire if there're issues.

I'm so excited for this! It actually reminds me more of Slings and Arrows with musical theatre instead of Shakespeare, which would be excellent.

So it'll be something like a way more grown-up Glee? I could go for that...to bad I don't have Showtime.

I thought of Sling and Arrows too.

Do you remember the musical at the end of the third/last season?

"Its a beautiful day in East Hastings! I didn't wake up on the floor. It's a beautiful day in East Hastings for a whore!!

Profound musical theater lyrics.....
