I haven’t seen it, but the cast recording made me sad. Not a single new song is good, and the old songs are all re-arranged to the point that they no longer sound like the film songs we fell in love with in the first place. As a huge fan of Alan Menken and Hercules, I was very disappointed. And from what I’ve read, it’s not one of those “it works better live” situations. Such a shame, it really is a property that has so much potential, but they just can’t seem to figure it out.

There’s a workshop happening currently that wraps up at the end of the month.

Both Gladys Knight and Natalie Cole were announced for AFTER MIDNIGHT, but the show closed before their scheduled debuts.

The Oscars are moving to YouTube in 2029, not the Tonys. Nothing has been announced as of yet about the future plans for the Tonys if they or CBS decide not to renew their contract.

I guess I must have a higher pain threshold or something, because I didn’t think this was nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. I think its biggest sins are that it feels like a show from 30 or 40 years ago (which considering that the youngest person on the writing team is 82 years old makes sense), its cheap set and costume design make the recent revival of THE WIZ look lavish and expensive in comparison, and the music is just kind of……well, it’s music. I’d be delighted to see the full cast transfer here, but with the show already being on the pricier side, I have my doubts that they’d be willing to take on the extra expense of housing everyone in NYC. I could definitely see the four actors who won Oliviers being offered the chance to transfer, though.

Just for clarity, he returned to the tour which is in Mexico City right now, not the Broadway production.

I got to see the re-release Universal put in theaters a few weeks ago to show off the new restoration. The film looks the best it’ll probably ever look. The colors were so vibrant, and the MANY wide shots in the movie looked gorgeous on the big screen, especially the Emerald City sequence.
