I saw Shrek. It was absolutley fantastic from start to finish.
First of all, biggest show to open on broadway since WICKED! Very colorful, beautiful sets, they obviously went all out. I was in the second row on the right, which made me nervous at first, but it was great because you were upclose and personal with this amazing cast! Speaking of which...
BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES was great as SHREK! God Bless him for having to put on that makeup and costume everynight (Talk about complete transiton for person to character). He made you feel for shrek and you really saw him grow as a person from Act I to Act II. He also had the accent down and a great voice.
SUTTON FOSTER is Sutton foster. She is and will always be fantastic in any role given to her. I saw her in DROWSY CHAPPERONE and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, and this was her best role! She made Fiona kinda like a spoof of all the disney pricesses. I liked how at the end of "I know its today" when she put her feet up on the railing. I think out of all the actors, her character was the least like the character in the movie. Completely different from what I expected (which I liked). She's just an amazing performer.
CHRISTOPHER SIEBER...wow. He made Farquad so flamboyant, so wicked, so self-centered. Brilliant. The whole allusion of height worked so well. He even played up the fact that he was on his knees when he proposed to fiona, and had trouble getting on one knee. He played up it up, and was on his game constantly. I think he has a good shot at a tony.
DANIEL BREAKER was good. I Liked him as donkey. He gave the audience exactly what you would expect. He was diiferent then Eddie Murphy in some ways. Like he wasn't as loud as Eddie Murphy was. He also gave the role some sass and attitude. You could tell donkey treated shrek with respect. James and Beaker had good chemisty together and it worked well on stage.
The FAIRY TALE CREATURES were all good. John Taglia was really funny as Pinnochio. They each had their own little traits for their charcters. I noticed howe Peter Pan was like obsessing over tinker bell.
The show was just overall hysterical. The spoofed everything from broadway (the wicked allusion was fantastic) and politics. I liked the songs, can't wait for the CD. There were only two things I didn't like. That song "Donkey Pot Pie" was wierd. Maybe because I was sitting so close, but it took away for the illusion of the dragon. Gingy's voice got a little anoying, but whatever.
I hoep this show does well. It's a good show for everyone. I highly recomend it. It's far from disney, so adults and teens will like it as well. GO SEE IT!

You called the show "absolutely fantastic from start to finish" and then finished your review with 2 things you didn't like.

It's sometimes hard to hold contradictions in our heads, bobby, but it's worth taking the time to try.

Lovely review! Shrek is one of those musicals I've been hoping will succeed, because I really want to see it someday-- so I'm hoping it'll run a long time. My fingers are crossed...
