There's just no easy answer to this question...NO!
Jay - The scene in the factory you remember as a flashback was almost correct. It's the song Come up to My Office. The girls were testifying in the courtroom and the scene fades into Leo acting out the girls' false testimony. It was such a haunting scene. The choreography was amazing as Leo transformed into the lecherous snake preying on these robotic unemotional young girls who moved together as one. I never forgot that. Everything about Parade was wonderful. I think its loss as Best Musical was probably the biggest mistake the Tonys ever made.
And while Contact wasn't a musical (neither was The Dead, really), it was a wonderful show. Contact should have received a special Tony and Best Musical probably should have gone to The Dead or The Wild Party.
I just dont know as to why Matthew Bourne's SWAN LAKE (1999) was not considered as Musical while CONTACT (2000) a year after~it was considered as Musical. It was basically the same.
and thanks for reminding me of the whole scene. PARADE was already closed by TONYS. I was even suprised to see the cast (still intact) performed at the TONYS.

yes. James Joyce's THE DEAD and THE WILD PARTY should have been the major contender for the TONYS that year!

Without a doubt yes
What a shame this show did not do better. It was not due to the actors, score or anone else connected with it. First rate all the way.
