Side Show question

my school is doing this for the musical this year. does anyone know what it is about? i know that it has to do with siamese twins in a freak show. that's about it. thanks!

the show itself, is mostly sung-through, if not entirely so. so, its definitely not for everyone. the music though is AMAZING, its henry krieger so how could it not be? but yea, just beware, its VERY different, but the payoff is HUGE is you can handle it.

yeah i read the synopsis and it seems very different. i'm up for anything though.

the most fun show i've been in! i played the Bearded Lady in San Jose Children's Musical Theatre's production when I was 15. the music is absolutely amazing. the show is very dark and very different. with a good cast and director it can be stellar. but good leads are essential. your Daisy and Violet need to be up to the job, it's not an easy show.

i'm shooting for violet. i will seriously do anything i have to. i don't care how crazy or twisted it is.

you have a distinct advantage if there is another girl auditioning who is close to your height. a school probably wouldn't be too nit-picky about finding girls who really look alike, but it doesn't work logistically if the twins have a height difference of more than an inch or so. it's a lot of moving around stage connected at the hip.

Your school is very ambitious. It's a wonderful show though with beautiful music. Lyrics are a bit iffy, but it's okay.

Do find a copy of the cast recording. Just listening will give you a good idea of the plot. "Who Will Love Me As I Am" is just gorgeous.

SERIOUSLY! ALL four years of high school I BEGGED my director to do Side Show...

His response was, "Um, and cast you as Daisy AND Violet?" I could see where he was coming from... he had like a set group of kids who were his "leads" time after time... and NO ONE else in that group could have remotely passed as my siamese twin. But STILL! COLORBLIND CASTING, folks!

Still to this day am I disappointed we never did it.

That's okay, when I'm Daisy in the revival everything will be fine.

there are plenty of high school girls who can sing the hell out of Side Show. the hard part is finding 3 high school guys who can sing well enough for Terry, Buddy, and Jake. and even though Ken Jennings didn't do it, the Boss is supposed to hit a high B a few times.

Screw that... I could sing "I Will Never Leave You" three years ago... I'm sure there are one or two teenaged girls out there that can as well.

consider yourself lucky! not many high school's do side show. it's a great show, one of my favorites actually. but daisy and violet need to be kickass belters. give it your best and good luck? ps, what school do you go to?

I saw a high school for performing arts in CA do this show two years ago and I have to say that the two girls were simply amazing! They brought the house down. It is a tough show to get right, but if your school is creative and the two girls can belt big time then good luck and much success!

Theater anywhere, anytime and with anyone. It's my passion.

The songs in that show still give me goosebumps when I listen to them. And high school girls are fully able to sing I will Never Leave you. Well, some of them. Good luck with your audition and show! It should be a really fun musical to do.

I saw it on Broadway and found the show deeply moving. I think it's a beautiful pice of theatre with a message for all of us. It's a shame that the cast recording doesn't contain the entire score. The recording is great but it barely glosses over the deeper issues. On Broadway I was fascinated with how the girls emotions played out onstage. One of my favorite shows.

I don't see any reason why high school girls can't play Daisy and Violet if they're good enough. I could have done it. Why is that any different than any other shows that high schools attempt?

true, and its not like these girls would be doing 8 shows a week. but, there are definitely high school girls who can sing the sh*t out of those songs.

bway matt is right, the real problem is finding all the guys.

One of my favorites, too. I even did that fan thing and went closing night -- which was stirring and then some.

I think it's terrific that high schools are finding this material. It's actually a very tasteful show, not full of tacky double-entendre. And the music just lifts it. The only sections tricky to make seem sufficiently adult: "Private Conversation," which really requires a very vulnerable, manly side of Terry ... and of course, "Tunnel of Love,"which has challenging notes and almost becomes maudelin if not done with total conviction. For this show to work, you cannot back away from the size of the emotion--the emotion carries it, not the so-called subject matter. It's a beautiful love story, and I don'tcare what John Lahr thought (famously) in the New Yorker about "I Will Never Leave You" -- to me, the irony of it being sung by two sisters who cannot part makes it simply heart-rending. I get teary thinking of the verse... ("...if we stood on our tiptoes, we could see a girl walking up the hill ... and we'd think what a sad situation, to go through life with no playmate, to go through life all alone...") Cynics, back off. It's heartfelt stuff. Brava to the ambitious drama teacher!

I concur, Auggie. I mean, it clearly has it's weak points... but on the whole, it's a beautiful story.
