With absolutely no scientific evidence to support my opinion, I also believe that it is the breathing (and particularly the forceful exhale of singing) that is part of the benefit. Older people, especially those who do not exert themselves, breathe shallowly and quickly, rather like quiet panting. This causes them to retain higher volumes of carbon dioxide, really just aerating the upper lobes of their lungs. Singing requires dropping the diaphragm and taking a deeper breath. More breath, more oxygen, better brain function. If these older folks know and like the tunes, they will relax, breathe better and probably also sleep better.
