Why is there this weird curtain-like thing hanging from the ceiling? I have noticed it in every picture of the pre-show and was just wondering why they had it and if it served a purpose.

Its a catwalk. There are spot ops up there. Sometimes shows use those, like the addams family, most recently. Its depends on the show and the theatre.

It's not part of the set. The picture is misleading, but it's actually way up above the proscenium, and when the lights are down you don't even notice it.

Yeah this picture was taken from the balcony. I've seen this show a few times, and I've never noticed this before. I actually sat in the balcony last Thursday and still didn't notice it.

Oh great, now for every show someone will ask if there's a catwalk and if so, what color is the curtain covering it!

its called a Border, or Tormentor. Its for masking lighting, so its out of audience view.
