Posted: 6/17/06 at 11:44pmI heard that the workshop went very well and that the show is fantastic. Now supposedly the show takes place in the 70's and there's a large variety of music written by Menken. So I think this is definately one we should anticipate

Very excited about this production! I'll definitely be traveling out to LA at the start of this run in October. The show has a website, but it still has a lot of "Coming Soon" sections.

Posted: 6/18/06 at 9:47amI love the music, so I will be interested in hearing how this is. I envy those close to LA, as I would love to see Curtains also, and that is running through August and part of Sept. I hope they both come to Broadway.

I'll be seeing this and Curtains. I'm really excited for this show since I love both the movies.
I was lucky to get $20 tickets to Curtains.
It's cool to get some stuff in LA first.

You know, Paul Ruddnick wrote the original screenplay and let the producers remove his name from it when he didn't like the direction the film was taking. (He originally wrote it for Bette Midler.)
I wonder if he'll be receiving any royalties from this?

Posted: 6/18/06 at 2:38pmI cannot wait for this--I have been hoping for this musical for years! I only wish they combined one and two--all the good music is in Sister Act 2.

Posted: 6/18/06 at 4:36pmI heard the music and it sounds really fun, and great of course. I was expecting more gospely, but it's more "discoey".

Pasadena Playhouse's shows are usually offered at Goldstar event. But if Sister Act becomes a huge hit, natually they won't offer it.
I'm hoping to see it along with The Wiz at La Jolla Playhouse. I'm already have the hot tix for Curtains, yay!

I got my ticket today to see Sister Act and I am in the fifth row from the stage, almost dead center. The cost was $73 but after having been to NYC this week I feel that is about what a discount ticket would cost, so I am happy. The D row is considered Premium seating, which were mostly sold out, and they charge more, but I don't see how being in C or E makes much of a difference, and it is cheaper.
Also ordered my ticket to Curtains today and that was a bit pricey but, again, I just compare it to NYC and won't complain.
After Jersey Boys took Best Musical, and knowing La Jolla Playhouse's good luck with getting things on Broadway, I called and got a ticket to their new production of Zhivago that is currently running. In a few months, they are doing The Wiz in a new production. I was told by a ticketseller that for that production they are removing the F row (I think) and making it part of the Yellow Brick Road. The other rows will remain in front of and back of it. I got a Gold Premium ticket (considered the best seats) in the row in front of it. It will mean craning my neck a bit whenever the action passes by that way, but it should be great. The ticket was about $100 but compare that to the VIP tickets of $250 on Broadway.
I am trying to keep an eye out more on the California theater scene after Drowsy Chaperone and Jersey Boys have done so well. And Chita Rivera's The Dancer Life had come from San Diego.

Hmm, for Zhivago, you could have gotten a tix via Goldstar event or rush as they have it every week. It's crazy for a regional theatre to charge $100 though, even if it's a premium tix. They are a non-profit theatre, aren't they? If so how come they can charge extra over the normal price? Will the "extra" go to a charitable "tax deductable" funding?
I'll see The Wiz and knowing the theatre configuration at La Jolla I don't mind even if I have to sit at the last row (especially if I get a rush price).

Posted: 6/18/06 at 10:40pmWell, for Zhivago, I think their max Gold Seat is about $75, which is I think $12 more than the regular seat in the area. I see the extra charge because it is the best seats in the house area. I don't think this is outrageous. I don't know why Wiz is $100, and it does seem high, but what the hell, after paying $111.25 for a mezz seat on Broadway, I am okay with it. True, if I considered it an amateur theater group or even a professional theater group doing just ordinary productions after they have produced majorly by somebody else, then I would never pay higher prices. But La Jolla's productions sometimes go to Broadway, which I believe Zhivago and The Wiz will be doing, then I don't mind.
La Jolla is an important starting place for Broadway productions. I missed out on Jersey Boys and was in NYC last week and couldn't buy a ticket unless I wanted to pay $250 for a VIP ticket, which I didn't. I am also willing to pay more nowadays because I am so sick of sitting in back rows or off to the sides or in balconies. It's like eating in fast food places, you get tired of eating off paper plates and want real ones once awhile. And it is a drive for me from L.A. to La Jolla, so I might as well not be disappointed. Waiting to see if a show like Sister Act will be a hit or not is too much of a crapshoot because of its limited time at the Pasadena Playhouse. Now, Curtains could very well be panned; in which case, I will be disappointed for paying a full price. After all, I saw Sondheim's The Doctor Is In (later aka Getting Away With Murder), another murder thriller, in San Diego years ago while it was trying out and it was okay, not great, and it bombed on Broadway. I will get discounted tickets whenever I can, but some you have to take a chance on getting at full or not at all. Look at Wicked. Sold out before it opened in L.A. Sold out before it opens in San Diego. Likely to sell out before it opens in Orange Country. Sold out while I was in NYC. It gets damn frustrating and theater shouldn't be.
