She sure didn't waste any time when she was let go from Sweet Charity. Good for her. You can always tell the ones that are loaded with talent, they bounce right back.

But aren't we missing the biggest part of the story. She's been hired to go into CHICAGO by the same producers who let her go from SWEET CHARITY.
I'm dying to know what went on!

"She's been hired to go into CHICAGO by the same producers who let her go from SWEET CHARITY."
It was director's choice to let her go. Possibly, the producers arranged Chicago for her because they knew she was talented and wanted to keep her in their stable.

Posted: 3/23/05 at 2:13pmI doubt Bobbie would have been able to let her go if the Weissler's didn't ok that.

She and Natascia Diaz were let go because Walter Bobbie wanted two older actresses in the roles to make Charity/Christina look more vulnerable. It didn't have anything to do with talent.
Ironically, Diaz and Sandy would have been too young to do the roles opposite D'Amboise, so I suppose fate had the last word.

Posted: 3/23/05 at 6:24pmMaybe it was the amplification, but I couldn't understand a word she said in Sweet Charity. And who the heck is Annie in Chicago?

The one who poisons her husband with Arsenic.
I think she's gonna be great. Her and Testa will be nice additions.

Good news for Sandy!
And I'm with MichaelBennett....the two were too young to support the roles, the director realized it, and fixed the problem.

Posted: 3/23/05 at 7:35pmWhile Sandy is a beautiful girl, neither she nor Diaz looked any younger than Applegate, especially Diaz. I know nothing about the "inside track" on this scandal but that's not it.

My opinion only....I think the two characters are supposed to look like they've "been around the block" a few more times than Charity....and they ended up looking just LIKE Charity.

A bit OT, but who was Testa in Forum and On the Town? Domina and Hildy?
I have never seen her, but only heard OBCs and she seems fabulous. You can hear presence in her voice.

Solange is taking over for the lovely Roxane Carrasco who recently departed Chicago to go into Broadway's The Mambo Kings.
The character Annie is 'six' in the Cell Block Tango and her monologue mentions "You know, some guys just can't hold their arsenic!"

Ahhh..CJR
I been meaning to ask you...there has been a lot of talk about Walter Bobbie lately due to the Sweet Charity threads. I really enjoyed Chicago, LOVED White Christmas, Compleat Female Stage Beauty and Tenderloin. Alas, I didn't see Footloose so I can't comment either way. Maybe that's good.
You seem to know a lot about the "Chicago" cast and crew. Any thoughts on his work or personality?

Posted: 3/24/05 at 12:23amThanks so much for the response! I've only seen half his work and met him once (while he was in SF with White Christmas) and got the same impression. I found the comments around Sweet Charity a little harsh. I am rooting for Charlotte, though! I saw her in Chicago, oh, years ago..and am happy she is getting the chance at this role while she can. What a dancer!

What makes me happier, actually, is that with Charlotte out of 'Chicago' with 'Charity', the amazing Michelle DeJean gets to cover Roxie. Now THATS something to talk about!
She's got talent seeping out of her

She's the gorgeous redhead who was playing Mona. She's been with Chicago on and off for years....
Actually, she's also one of the poster girls. The one with the beautiful woman in the mesh body stocking standing in front of the car... yeah, that's Michelle

I find this very interesting.
Just think:
You've been fired from a big supporting role in the new revival of Sweet Charity.
Then the announcement is given to the press a few days later that you will be joining the cast of an already long-running revival produced by the same people and directed by the same person who have just fired you.
I think what probably happened is that firing Ms. Sandy, the Weisslers and Bobbie knew that Ms. Sandy was talented, however they needed to go a different direction with her role.
However they hired her for Chicago, knowing full well she deserved to be on Broadway.
Just a speculation.

Posted: 3/24/05 at 5:23pmI agree with your speculation. I think it was one of those tough decisions to make, and they wanted to soften the blow a bit.

Posted: 3/24/05 at 5:33pmI have worked with Walter Bobbie as a performer, and he is terrific. He replaced Anthony Heald in the revival of ANYTHING GOES at the Vivian Beaumont, which I was conducting, and he was a sweetheart.

Posted: 3/24/05 at 6:25pmYou are a conductor? That's fantastic! I have a friend out west here in CA that is a conductor (regional only..at this point!). Just out of curiosity, what is the hardest show to conduct for? Maybe that's the wrong term...musically challenging?
