Well, obviously the emotional maturity of a 21 year old is different from that of a 40 year old (although not always). But one doesn't need to have the exact life experience to be able to empathize with the characters in a play. Aspects of the human condition such as melancholy, regret, loneliness, unrequited love, disappointment with the path of your life--these are all things we cope with on a day to day basis at almost any age. When they've had a little time to wear on us certainly we come to a different understanding. But to me, that's the point of books, theater, music, etc... they grow with you. The good ones, at least.

It's all about the ability to empathize, which is what a lot of young people lack (argue with me if you will, but at this point in our lives we're supposed to be self absorbed anyway). A person can have had a very easy life at 21 or at 40, I think.

I don't understand why people keep saying they don't get it. What's so hard about it? Is it the accents? You've seen movies where the characters had British accents before, haven't you?

PS: Semantics, but technically in this thread you are stating your opinion. So it is both a statement and an opinion.

I keep thinking the same thing. What's not to get? The accents were a little difficult at first, but after a few minutes my brain adjusted. The only thing i didn't understand (aside from most of the French) was why Dakin was the way he was (him being such a predator).

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand. Do you mean you don't understand why Dakin's personality was so forward?

I thought the French scene was kind of fun because I couldn't always understand what they were saying but it was fun to try to figure it out.

I'm 17 and The History Boys is one of my favourite theatrical experiences ever - I saw it four times in London. Smaxie, I think that for some young people there are themes and ideas and feelings in this play that can affect them very deeply; things which may be less relevant to adults. I think the quote you included from the Gypsy review could be applied perfectly to this play. Although some young people seem to dismiss the play as boring, I know many other young people who have been deeply affected by it.

And the quote you have in your signature is one of the most touching and truthful things I have ever read or seen, in any medium.

It wasn't him being forward, it was him being a predator. He was unusually aggressive. And that left me scratching my head.
