1.) It isn't like he said. You prob'ly hurt his pride. He's got to have it all, like a baby who's denied.
2.) I didn't see Mandy or Randy, but judging from bootlegs, Mandy was warm and stellar, if not as iconic and authentic as Michael Rupert had been. Randy was really wonderful and funny in a different way than Barbara Walsh, and impressively belty.

I thought he was insanely brilliant in the show, but not knowing ANYTHING about the show at all before hand and being that Mandy is one of my all time idols, my opinion might be a bit skewed. Remember this was before Mandy went uber-"crazy." The most important thing, I guess, is that I believed him and his Marvin. It was very small (shocking I know) and heartful.

His rendition of "Father to Son," linked below, is really lovely. There's also an, ahem, less official recording of "What Would I Do?" on the site. Check it out--he seems like a wonderful Marvin.
Randy Graff, from what I've seen/heard, was an ideal Trina. Her "I'm Breaking Down" is definitive, IMO.

I saw Falsettoland downtown at the Lortel and there really was nobody to beat Michael Rupert, Stephen Bogardus, Faith Prince and Chip Zien.
Faith Prince singing "Holding to the Ground" is one of my favorite theater memories. It was one of those great moments where the right actress meets the right song.
I realize that when the show went to Broadway there was a different theater dynamic between the Lortel and the Golden, but I just didn't think Barbara Walsh did justice to the song.
Sorry I did get to see Mandy and Randy.
