Is somebody really that obsessed with Shoshana that they hacked into her fansite?
No, but really I feel bad for the webmsaters. It seems like they put alot of hard work into that site. And I would imagine I would feel awful if it had happened to one of my websites. Good luck with getting it back up and running!

Ok you guys do realize that MOST hacks are NOT targeted.
hackers often just go after random exploits and test as many ip ranges as they can.
Unless the site goes down again or receives another range of attacks then its targeted.
But often they arent.

Very true, kasim. They do it because they can and it's... well... fun. For them. "Breaking the rules" and all that. Pfffft. *rolls eyes*
I wasn't saying that they specifically targeted Shoshana's site, just trying to head off the less-than-fans who may take a moment in this thread to cheer or make some other inappropriate comment. From a pure work standpoint, I wanted to send my best to the webmaster and hope that the last saved date will restore things quickly. Rebuilding is a complete bitch.

let this be a heads-up
NEVER depend on your webhost; ALWAYS have your own back-ups for your website since it looks like the ones for SBO were 3+ weeks old

Ummm actually that IS your webhosts job.
That is partially what you pay them for to do your backups, to make sure the server is up, and to report things in a timely fashion.
I worked in data center operations in the past, part of their service level agreements IS to provide it. They should have quite a few backups, a nightly on site incremented backups. As well as tape backup in offsite location.
if they dont they are not living up to their agreements and quite frankly can be sued.
If she was GOING to go to the trouble of having her own backups she might as well then host it herself then.

um, if you read the Terms of Service of webhosts
you will see that they don't guarantee anything and are not responsbile for anything; those TOSs are written by lawyers
if your website is that important to you then it IS your job to do the back-ups. PERIOD.
a good webhost will do periodic back-ups; but no guarantees
if SBO was using PHP scripts that are exploitable by hackers hopefully those exploits have been fixed so it doesn't happen again

so it got hacked, that's bad, but now it's slowly coming back...alls well that ends well.

Ummm .. that would be a BIG NO!
Have you ever worked for a web hosting company?? They have these things called SLA (service level agreements) In them they guarantee certain things. They guarantee you will have network access to your box, they guarantee your box will be up a certain amount of time (both of these are usually 99.9% at a good site, 90-95% at a cheaper site). They also guarantee to do backups. Its not a good host might do them. THat makes no logical sense. Eh we may or may not do them. NO they DO DO THEM. It is THEIR AGREEMENT.
THIS is why you pay these people to host your site, becaues you yourself do not want to be responsible for it.
Sorry you are wayyyy wrong here.

what good is a backup that is 3 weeks old?????
and supposing they don't? are you going to sue them?
you'll spend more on lawyers fees than on what you paid for an account
