I will be in New York city the week that Something Rotten opens. When ticket sales opened, I decided to buy tickets, I saw tickets available for Monday, April 20 and Tuesday, April 21st, but no tickets available for April 22 (opening night)or the next night. I bought tickets for one of the last previews, but I was wondering if it is typical to not sell tickets to the public for opening night, and not have a show the night after opening night. This may be the way shows typically work, but it is the first time I have been in New York for a show that I wanted to see that happened to be opening while I was there. Thanks for any info about this.

Tix for opening night are nearly always pulled so that producers and important guests can all get tickets. However, there is usually a deadline to claim those tickets. After that deadline (whatever it is) any remaining tickets are released for public sale. so, if you keep checking, tix MAY become available.

As for the night after...no that is not usual. Perhaps that week they are dark on an alternative date.

If you are interested in attending opening night while you are in the city, TodayTix usually always gets tickets to openings closer to the date and will sell them!

I'm fairly certain that it's very common for a show to be dark the day after opening.

I've been to plenty of shows the day after opening.

I have not. I feel it is typical that the day after open is dark.

That practice is still done for most Off Broadway shows but becoming less frequent now on Broadway, especially if the show opens between a Thursday-Saturday. Some shows change their schedule week of opening to accommodate this, I have a friend working on The Heidi Chronicles who said the cast and crew were given both Sunday and Monday off this week to accommodate opening being on Thursday.
