This is a great album, one of a series of absolute gems released on the late lamented Varese Saraband label. My fav tracks are What Can You Lose (sung by Guy Haines), which is one of my fav Sondheim songs; an awesome version of Sooner Or Later by Jane Krakowski; and a pretty much unknown but really beautiful song written for The Bird Cage, Little Dream (sung by Susan Egan). The Evening Primrose Suite is not as good as the one on Mandy Patinkin's Dress Casual album (sung by Patkinkin and Bernadette Peters) but Liz Callaway's "I Remember" is pretty stunning.

Varese Sarabande is still going - though they do mostly film soundtacks now, by the looks of it.

Yeah, but it's not really the same company since Bruce Kimmel quarreled with them and apparently took most of the albums he produced (and owned copyright for) with him (you'll notivce hardly any of his vintage albums are listed on the website). Some of my most prized possessions in my CD collection are the Kimmel produced classics like the "Lost In Boston" series (featuring many awesome songs cut from shows), the Unsung Musicals series as well as many great studio cast recordings of musicals.

Ah, OK. New management. So did it used to be a specialist musical theatre label?

Take Me to the World is in my top 3 of all Sondheim!

Yes, Varese Saraband was a specialist Musical Theatre label, mainly run by producer Bruce Kimmel and they recorded and released some fantastic albums with top Broadway vocalists. Some were "complilation" albums of songs cut from shows or from lesser-known shows. Some were studio recordings of complete shows. Some were actual orginal cast albums. And they were all oustanding quality. I'm not sure exactly what happened but Kimmel left VB and set up his own label Fynsworth Alley, which also produced some brilliant MT albums before there was another falling out and Kimmel left there too! He now owns and runs the record label Kritzerland.

At their height they were truly brilliant, almost like the old RCA Red Label in the way the albums were sublimely produced.

I love this CD. My particular favourite is Sondheim's take on We Are Family called It Takes All Kinds.

Infact I've got to go play it now...
