Sondheim Lyric Change?

Ok, a question that have come up in my recent listenings...

1. In Merrily We Roll Along, during "Bobby and Jackie and Jack", Beth has a line about paint colors ("We're bringing back style to the White House!/I'm painting it beige for a start)...at least, it's beige on the OBCR. In all subsequent recordings the color is "cream" instead. Does anyone know if there's a particular reason for this?

The lyric is "cream" on my copy of the original cast recording.
