Are they friends or do they try to avoid each other as possible?

if Sondheim considers his work a rivel of Webber than he has a bad case of Inferiority complex

They did that cute number together at the Cameron MacKintosh Special. So they appear to have liked each other 8 years ago :).

If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....

Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

I don't think there are any feelings of hate between the two, more just a friendly theatrical competition. You can still get along with those you try to beat. Caroline- I love that comment more than anything! re: Sondheim & Webber rivalry?

I don't think there's even friendly theatrical competition. I mean it's not good for anyone in the business to compete. I think they are both minding their own theatrical business and could care less about the so called rivalry that's non-existant.

Professionally speaking, I believe that they're very curteous to one another. I know Lloyd Webber never has a negative word towards Sondheim when asked about him, and from what I've heard, Sondheim has never singled Lloyd Webber out by name and criticized his work. I think these two set a real example of a professional relationship. They handle themselves like real gentlemen.

As for their personal feelings towards one another, I have no idea what they think of each other, and I wouldn't expect anyone on an online message board to know.

Their FANS have at each other fairly often. The composers, no doubt, have better things to do.

I don't think there's a rivalry between them, but I do find it somewhat of a coincidence that they both share the same birthday (March 22), albeit 18 years apart.

theyboth produce very different types of musicals

both having very different types of markets...I'm sure some people can't decide to see Woman in White or Company or what ever but that will be very few

in london they both play to very different houses, ALW having big commerical theatre. Sondheim in small commerical, fringe or state theatre/opera houses.

ive never been on ALW chat board but I know the sondhiem ones sondeheim.com does have some very intellecutal things said - I'm Budd on there!!!
