Actually we quite fancied RENE Z in FOLLIES! Now who could she play????????

Sorry, but I just can't see Cher being able to convincingly play a doormat like Sally. Now, her as PHYLLIS would be an interesting idea.
Margo, I'm not totally convinced Sally is the dormat. I think it may be Buddy! There is definitely more to see in Sally for the right actor.

In movie musicals, it's not about characterization, it's about the music. Think what Cher could do with "Losing My Mind".
GOTHAMPC.... is this an arguement FOR Cher or AGAINST?
I vote Cher for Phyllis. I can see her doing "The Story of Lucy and Jessie!"
YEAH..... but could she manage "COULD I LEAVE YOU?"
I want this movie made ---- Running off, stamping feet!
Oh, hell yeah she could nail that song! Just imagine all that hair flipping and tongue wagging! Brilliant!
OK I'm convinced Cher's in! Now where did I put that contract?
No matter who is in it, it neeeeds to be filmed in an actual abandoned vaudeville theater of which there are plenty in the Tri State area. This would give it an air of realism that would give any film a big boost

Sing it two octaves lower than it should be sung?

EGGBY you seem like a terribly nice guy, but I have a violent reaction anytime CZetaJones is on anyone's dream list. I'll never get over Chicago. Sue me.
But this is a fun thread and age appropriate for me.

Phyllis: Goldie Hawn
The Goldman script describes PHYLLIS, who is the wife of an U.N. ambassador, as "tall and queenly, stylish and intelligent." Yep, sounds just like Goldie Hawn.
Sally: Cher
You know, I always think of domestic hausfrau when I think of Cher.
Ben: Pierce Brosnan
Yep, middle-aged ennui, despair, and self-loathing are right up Pierce's alley.
Carlotta: Tina Turner
In what alternate universe was she ever in the Follies?
I mean, this was meant to be a joke, right?
A SHOWGIRL
The stage of the Weissman theater
I remember reading that in the late seventies there was talk of making the movie with Doris Day as Sally and believe it or not Elizabeth Taylor as Phyllis (then as a publicity stunt the casting of Debbie Reynolds as Sally along side Ms. Taylor was bantered about). I think Doris would've been a perfect Sally however after seeing Liz in "A Little Night Music" which was released around that time, I'd take a pass. In adapting the project for Taylor and Day, it was also mentioned that the creators would possibly be changing the story from a theater related background to that of a movie studio being torn down. I wasn't too crazy about that idea but I imagine it could have worked with Sondheim making the necessary changes.

Back after BEACHES, and BLOSSOM - about the time of GYPSY, I'd hoped FOLLIES would get made with Midler as Sally and Bialyk as Young Sally. Recently I saw Bialyk on FAT ACTRESS and my dreams have been destroyed.
I wrote to Michael Eisner back when Disney was redoing the New Amsterdam for LION KING and suggested it was the ideal time to put some Disney money in a film of FOLLIES - the set was at hand! Never heard back, though . . .
Disney really blew it. Imagine doing the movie in the derelict New Amsterdam with all the history & ghosts abounding. How Mickey Mouse
Fear not as many other such derelict theaters are all around should they ever get the desire to do it
Just thought. What about AUDRA McDONALD as Sally with DENZEL WASHINGTON as BUDDY?
